All of the premium pastes will have good performance and if the stock paste has cured to hardness you will notice a big difference just by changing it.
I'm not sure what you mean by correct application harming it. You want enough paste to form a thin interface layer but you don't need gobs. Maybe a drop the size of a pea or so. If you want to be really sure you can use a scrap of plastic to spread it evenly and thinly.
