Hey StarJack, in the the Thunderbolt app under details does it say you have the 15BF in the thunderbolt controller generation section? Or does it say something else?

The list is empty, no devices. There is also no menu or any other indications of anything, lol.

You would have to install the firmware update manually from the support page then. That's what I had to do with mine when it was like that.

Your on the GL702VM right? If so go to the link below, select your OS and then scroll down to the 'other' tab.

It will be the very top option called "Update Thunderbolt Firmware". Install that, reboot, and the information should show up. 🙂

I've installed that package and unfortunately still see nothing under my Thunderbolt app, not even a menu.

Also, if I run Winflash which I downloaded from the support page for flashing the BIOS it just tells me "Winflash does not support this BIOS update."

Interesting. Asus needs to step up their game. They are making this way more confusing than it needs to be for people. lol

Here are specs for my ASUS ROG, please let me know if I should have the true 40GB TB3

Purchased from BestBuy USA
GL702VM-BHI7N09
6th gen i7
12gb Ram
1060 6gb

let me know if you need any more info.

I have the same problem with my GL702VM, cant get the thunderbolt to work.
Updated the firmware with the update tool and when it was updating its shows "controller 1 port1 " in the thunderbolt software
after a few minutes it says Thunderbolt firmware update successful please shut down to apply the update and enable Thunderbolt.

But it does not recognize any devices that i connect.

I am a bit disappointed about what I am reading here.

Anybody had any success with Thunderbolt on a GL720VM?

From what I read above the original people in this thread that had issue getting the TB3 working has got it to work properly. You should make sure you update the firmware and check that Thunderbolt is enabled in your BIOS.

NVM version is way too low.

Other brands with thunderbolt 3 have updated to nvm 15 or 16.

NVM 4 would make it incompatible with a lot of devices.

Those are full speed thunderbolt controller thats why they are at 15 or 16. The half speed controller uses a different firmware hence a different version number.

I wish bill@asus or another ASUS rep would come and shed some light on Thunderbolt controllers and speed etc...

I think only the G series has a full speed thunderbolt 3 port. My GL702VM is a LP controller so from everything that I can find on the subject it is half speed (20 Gbps).

I have had issue where my USB 3.1 and Thunderbolt disappear from Device Manager (hidden devices) and to solve this have to reflash the Thunderbolt firmware. It could be that if I had a usb 3.1 or Thunderbolt device and plug it in it will bring it will show up again??? I had to reflash it 3 or 4 times because it stopped showing up in Device Manager or even showing any info in the Thunderbolt software. Seems like maybe the firmware gets corrupt or wiped for some reason over time. If you notice it missing just flash the most recent TB firmware for your device.
