GL702VM, Ge Force have gone mad.....

I logged into Ge Force today with the intention of playing one of their VR games, this is after the kids and I have spent 4 hours on everything from Google Earth VR to Rocket League, and they refuse to let me play because they say my i5-6300HQ is not powerful enough. I spent weeks looking at VR ready laptops and decided on the GL702VM-003t after Asus assured me that it would play any VR game out there straight from the box. My intention is to upgrade the ram from 8 to 32GB at a later date but I don't want to upgrade the processor as well......................
What are my options???????

I also have a glitchy trackpad if anyone knows of a fix....I have changed drivers, chipset and ATK package as advised by Asus which hasn't worked....Thanks..

You mean the games are telling you it's not good enough?

and could you please tell me what you mean by ''glitchy trackpad''?

ROG-GL702VM
HM170 chipset, i5-6300HQ CPU, 8GB DDR4-2133, 6GB GTX1060, Win10 Home

8GB RAM is just too little these days. The WinOS itself bloats out to 4GB~8GB before even running a game.
Two SO-DIMM sockets, you might be able to add memory to an empty socket but if they're both filled you'll have to replace the existing memory.

Note that mobile GTX1060 is not as powerful as desktop GTX1060. It's probably also throttled by power and heat limits, at least when on battery.

Your Win10 likely came with the usual "value bundled" preinstalled OEM (ASUS) junkware. Not sure if this actually negatively impacts your performance, but it never helps.

I'd say your GL502VM model is not at all VR Ready. It's below minimum hardware specifications.
The GL502VM models which come with i7-6700HQ CPU and 16GB (or more) DDR4-2133 are VR Ready. At minimum hardware specifications.

I think this is something between a technical oversight and zealous exaggeration/hype by ASUS marketing. Multiple GL502VM models offer a range of hardware options, yours is at the lower end.

@OP says he has a GL702, not a GL502

He also says it's through Nvidia GeForce experience so it may be a requirement for there specific games but I don't know squat about VR

"VR Ready" is NVIDIA's term, apparently more of a marketing term than a technical term.

Sorry, GL502 was a typo, but my links/info were still based on GL702.

Could well be that the graphics card in the unit can very well handle SOME VR titles, but that doesn't say that the rest of the hardware can do the same.

It's like giving someone an engine and saying it can do 250Mph, but without the rest of the car to go with it, it isn't going to work 😕

I see where you're coming from when talking about the spec of my laptop and I have every intention of upping the ram to the 32GB max as soon as money permits but I was stunned when Ge Force who advocated this laptop as, although at the bottom end of VR, well able to play VR games say that I need an i7 processor to play their games. I am able to play any and all games, so far, on the Oculus site and on Steam although I did notice that the ram was almost maxxed out when using the Rift playing Ripcoil and web browsing, I do expect this with only 8GB and have dropped the settings on most games I've played so far to compensate for this.
I'm happy enough with the GL702 so far and I think it's a good basis to build on and although at nearly 50 I struggle sometimes with the tech involved but I've got 3 kids between 9 and 12 who I want to grow up with all of this. I wonder how to improve the laptop I have so any suggestions are welcome, are second hand parts a good idea perhaps???
Back to the trackpad.........it will work well for a couple of minutes and then the cursor moves very slowly (if at all) for a few seconds and then goes back to normal. If I press harder the cursor will move slightly but even putting the settings up to their most sensitive make no difference, I've also turned off the 3 finger settings and other settings as well and it makes no difference to the fault. It's like the trackpad loses sensitivity for a few seconds and then gets it back.
Thanks for your help so far it's much appreciated by this computer gaming newbie:D:D:D

Using a laptop cooling pad can help a lot, especially on technologically-dense high-power thin-bulk machines like your GL702VM. Cooler machine is happier machine, it runs smoother and faster, it lasts longer, you'll notice the difference on heavy games and peak loads.

These cooling pads tend to break easily - just a flimsy plastic frame with some fans in it - and kids can be rough on flimsy hardware when excited by games. Plan to replace a few times annually, lol.

Best workaround for a wonky touchpad is an external mouse. Wireless (Bluetooth) mice/mouses are a good choice, more fine control and more buttons. Invest in rechargeable batteries if the kids keep it busy for hours at a time, lol.

Ahh, so it does work for some VR stuff then, just not nVidia's own stuff.

Although saddening for you @OP, I can't help but giggle at the fact that they say ''yeah sure you can play VR with our hardware - just not our games'' 😛
