[GL702VM & similar] Solution to Performance issues / Overheating / Throttling / Whine

Hi guys, I bought GL702VM and was upset with its ability to handle games and high load. I had immediate temperature jump to over 85 jump and throttling / frame drops in games. So I decided to understand how to improve things, even though, I already lost my warranty due to my experiments, but at least I can answer for everyone, that:
- the main problem of this notebook is inefficient, insufficient cooling system with too thin fans, too small heatsinks, vent holes in a wrong places (aside, not above the fans).

To prove this, I first changed the thermal interface to liquid metal. That doesn't solve the issue. This proves, the thermal contact is ok, but heat dissipation is bad. Second, I ran stress tests with back cover removed - helped a lot, about 15-20 degrees off. The proves that air intake is wrong in this system.

I also removed an antidust tape with holes covering all the intake holes. That helped by around 5 degrees and also brought down air noise.

Then I came to idea of downvolting CPU and GPU, thanks to devs of ThrottleStop and MSI Afterburner, we can do this with relative ease.

The result: Fan noise reduced by half. Temp drop is huge. More speed due to ability of CPU/GPU to properly boost to max speed.

For your information - CPU is responsible for about 30% of heat, GPU - for 70%. So best idea is to undervolt the GPU, but for best results go for both.

THE GUIDE - CPU
Variant A - Install Intel Xtreme Tuning Utility

  • Go to Advanced Tuning tab and Change Dynamic CPU Voltage Offset to negative value (move slider to the left). -100mV is a good starting point. Leave Mode to Adaptive.
  • Apply changes.

My CPU holds -150mV well.

Variant B - Install Throttle Stop 8.3 or above

  • On main window click FIVR button
  • Under CPU Core Voltage move Offset Voltage slider to the left. -100mV is a good starting point. The lower value the less heat.
  • Click Apply. On the same window you can save settings to make them apply every time you start the app.


THE GUIDE - GPU

  • Download and Install MSI Afterburner 4.3 or above
  • In settings turn on Unlock voltage control and Unlock voltage monitoring
  • Close MSI Afterburner
  • Download my Voltage Profile for GTX 1060
  • Extract profile to some folder and then copy file to "C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner\Profiles". Click continue as Administrator when Windows asks permission to write.
  • Run MSI Afterburner, click on profile 1 (out of 5). Then press Ctrl+F. (1 - least heat, but may be unstable for some... 2, bit more voltage etc till 5.)
  • You will see my Voltage Curve (screenshot). What you'll see that it's flat until 1050mv. that means. 1050 will never be used, so will never be used any voltage except 831mV @ 1860 MHz and below.
  • Click apply to test this curve
  • If this curve is not stable for you - edit it to your taste: Click on 831mV dot and move it lower, so that lower freq will be used for that voltage, and for 1860 freq next available voltage will be used. Etc. Work with leftmost voltage dots to make everything stable.


This curve drops heat of GPU by at least 30%, which is huge.

THE GUIDE - COIL WHINE

Perform only these steps as Administrator:
1. At a command prompt, run the following command:
reg add HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Processor /v Capabilities /t REG_DWORD /d 0x0007e066
2. Restart the computer.
3. Run ThrottleStop v8.3 or above and uncheck C1E. Click save.

In theory, it will make CPU a bit hotter while system is idle, because it disables some advanced C-states, but i didn't notice that in monitoring app.
That solved like 99.9% of the noise, and in addition, disabling C1E in ThrottleStop solved noise issue completely.

as to the chinese knockoff, actually what you need to get is the exact type or model, mine also the chinese knockoff named tuffware instead opolar. but the one you want to pay attention is the model, get the LC05 or LC06 model, don't get the one that looks like a big square box. i own both models and the square box fan is trash.

i'm confused... the results are more or less the same between opolar and the back cover... i'm really hitting the limit of laptop cooling.


Actually I wouldn't expect the opolars to have any significant (more than 1-2 deg) once you drill holes above fans which makes sense.

Yeah, I ordered the exact same model as opolar, the price difference was huge, since if I want an Opolar, I will have to order from amazon.com and pay import duty of around 40$ on top which is really unfair. From aliexpress, it can still get stuck at customs, so fingers crossed.

btw, i should have mentioned it earlier, i didn't set my opolars fan speed, i just let it go automatically depends on the opolar sensors

but i really have to remind you guys to get the LC05 or LC06 model, not the box fan.

in automatic fan mode the opolars won't kick in until my temp reaches 65-70s. since it relies on its own sensors.

i'm sorry guys...

max speed fan is too noisy, while med fan speed is ok, level 9 has the same temp as level 10 but less noisy. great for gaming.

anymore tests you guys want me to do?

I can understand someone not liking the sound of the Opolars on 13, they can be loud. Personally, it doesn't bother me as I always game with headphones. I'd like to use the AUTO feature on them but they never go as high as 13 in auto with the temperatures produced by the laptop. I just fire them both up to 13 prior to my gaming session and then turn them down to 2 after I've finished playing and the system has gone back down to 36C (idle with both Opolars set to 2). Some folks would find this tedious and a pain in the butt and trust me, I do too. But I'm a stickler for keeping my temps on this unit as low as I can so I do what I have to do. I've owned 2 LC06's now for over a year and have had them running every day, almost all day. They work as good as new. Quality product and a beast for removing that hot air quickly.

for gl703vm there is a new bios out, version 311. I cannot test it because i'm out of town...someone can try if change something in thermals and fan mode?

Hi,
I own Asus GL703VM equipped with a 7700hq CPU and a 1060 GPU.
CPU would rise all the way up to 98+C when I would stop the benchmark.

I managed to drop the temps a lil bit using the following settings:

1. BIOS is the newest 311 version;
2. Minimum and maximum processor states are both at 99% in power options;
3 CPU undervoltage at -0.150mv through TrottleStop;
4. I'm using onjax' profile 2 in MSI AfterBurner and newest GeForce 1060 drivers.
5. Notebook Fan Control using GL702VM profile, fans working on 100%.
6. Cleaned the laptop from dust and applied an Arctic MX-4 paste on CPU and GPU.
7. Use a great laptop cooling pad.

After applying all of these, I would reach a stable 88-90C CPU and 88-90C GPU running FurMark benchmark in MSI AfterBurner for 10 mins on windowed fullscreen.

What would you guys recommend?
I don't think it's a decent result but what can I do more?
Only two things I think I have not done are buy two opolars, and drill holes in the bottom case of the laptop.

Please help with some ideas. Thank you.

P.S. I didn't find any change in temperature in the new BIOS version.

i don't like artic mx4...noctua nt-h1 or thermal grizzly kyounaut are much better non-conductive pastes; artic mx4 is an old gen paste. Actually i think that you wronged the application in any case because those result are worse than the stock paste on my gl703vm.

A question for you... the 311 bios have the new silent mode for fan or the same auto and overboost as 306? you noticed any changes on temperature or speed with the new bios?

Okay then. I'll buy me some TG Kryonaut and come back again to tell you guys if it made any difference to the temps. I think the Arctic MX-4 did make a difference but not as big as I anticipated, probably, and I'm seriously guessing here, it gave me around -2 to -3 degrees compared to the stock paste. If TG Kryonaut can give me another -5C I'll be flying.

Re the question about bios 311 I reckon you are talking about the ROG Gaming Center having an extra option in addition to auto and overburst under fan overburst? It doesn't. They are the only two in the menu.

I'll report back with the results of the new thermal paste.

Been using my GL702 with the 7700HQ and GTX 1070 for a few weeks now. I have my CPU running at adaptive -.150 volts via XTU because I can't get ThrottleStop settings to actually work. I have the GTX 1070 running at 1772 MHz/.831v which appears to be stable running oversampled PUBG and R6 Siege with maximum settings (GPU will peg 99%). Lastly, I have fan boost set to 25%. My temps hover in the 70s for both CPU and GPU - granted, the CPU isn't getting maxed out in game, so it may run hotter at full load.

Also, for those who haven't done it, the display panel easily overclocks from 75 Hz to at least 100 Hz in my experience (and from a few other comments I've read). With that in mind, I run the panel at 100 Hz but cap game framerates at 85 Hz via Rivatuner and have G-Sync enabled. Gives the benefit of G-Sync, higher FPS than stock, and no input lag due to capping the frames far below the refresh rate.

I don't understand why so many of you are running synthetic benchmarks. They're worthless. Play the damn games and adjust based on that. When I originally ordered the laptop, I saw this thread and panicked... also ordered 2 vacuum exhaust fans and a laptop cooling pad. Neither of these things made any worthwhile difference and just looked stupid and created more noise. I also see no need to modify the laptop's case unless you truly want/need maximum cooling, but as I mentioned, the external fans are not worth the effort.
