[GL702VM & similar] Solution to Performance issues / Overheating / Throttling / Whine

Level 9
Hi guys, I bought GL702VM and was upset with its ability to handle games and high load. I had immediate temperature jump to over 85 jump and throttling / frame drops in games. So I decided to understand how to improve things, even though, I already lost my warranty due to my experiments, but at least I can answer for everyone, that:
- the main problem of this notebook is inefficient, insufficient cooling system with too thin fans, too small heatsinks, vent holes in a wrong places (aside, not above the fans).

To prove this, I first changed the thermal interface to liquid metal. That doesn't solve the issue. This proves, the thermal contact is ok, but heat dissipation is bad. Second, I ran stress tests with back cover removed - helped a lot, about 15-20 degrees off. The proves that air intake is wrong in this system.

I also removed an antidust tape with holes covering all the intake holes. That helped by around 5 degrees and also brought down air noise.

Then I came to idea of downvolting CPU and GPU, thanks to devs of ThrottleStop and MSI Afterburner, we can do this with relative ease.

The result: Fan noise reduced by half. Temp drop is huge. More speed due to ability of CPU/GPU to properly boost to max speed.

For your information - CPU is responsible for about 30% of heat, GPU - for 70%. So best idea is to undervolt the GPU, but for best results go for both.

THE GUIDE - CPU
Variant A - Install Intel Xtreme Tuning Utility

  • Go to Advanced Tuning tab and Change Dynamic CPU Voltage Offset to negative value (move slider to the left). -100mV is a good starting point. Leave Mode to Adaptive.
  • Apply changes.

My CPU holds -150mV well.

Variant B - Install Throttle Stop 8.3 or above

  • On main window click FIVR button
  • Under CPU Core Voltage move Offset Voltage slider to the left. -100mV is a good starting point. The lower value the less heat.
  • Click Apply. On the same window you can save settings to make them apply every time you start the app.

THE GUIDE - GPU

  • Download and Install MSI Afterburner 4.3 or above
  • In settings turn on Unlock voltage control and Unlock voltage monitoring
  • Close MSI Afterburner
  • Download my Voltage Profile for GTX 1060
  • Extract profile to some folder and then copy file to "C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner\Profiles". Click continue as Administrator when Windows asks permission to write.
  • Run MSI Afterburner, click on profile 1 (out of 5). Then press Ctrl+F. (1 - least heat, but may be unstable for some... 2, bit more voltage etc till 5.)
  • You will see my Voltage Curve (screenshot). What you'll see that it's flat until 1050mv. that means. 1050 will never be used, so will never be used any voltage except 831mV @ 1860 MHz and below.
  • Click apply to test this curve
  • If this curve is not stable for you - edit it to your taste: Click on 831mV dot and move it lower, so that lower freq will be used for that voltage, and for 1860 freq next available voltage will be used. Etc. Work with leftmost voltage dots to make everything stable.

This curve drops heat of GPU by at least 30%, which is huge.

THE GUIDE - COIL WHINE
Workaround described here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/975530

Perform only these steps as Administrator:
1. At a command prompt, run the following command:
reg add HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Processor /v Capabilities /t REG_DWORD /d 0x0007e066
2. Restart the computer.
3. Run ThrottleStop v8.3 or above and uncheck C1E. Click save.

In theory, it will make CPU a bit hotter while system is idle, because it disables some advanced C-states, but i didn't notice that in monitoring app.
That solved like 99.9% of the noise, and in addition, disabling C1E in ThrottleStop solved noise issue completely.

yes i did, the best i could get is 82-85 degree on gpu and around 78-82 on cpu after 5 minutes of playing battlefield 1

the only good thing about this laptop is i can use it as a radiator during winter, it is definitly not for the gaming.

Same here! (GL702VM)
Tried everything from the software part. Even these last suggestions from frawstme. Nothing just works and temperatures are just the same as yours.

I will soon go for the bottom case mod. Just waiting for my warrantly to expire. I think that is the only thing it really might help.

Damn guys, that sucks. I'm sorry to hear that. I was hoping that it might help some of the older gen computers as well. I don't understand how the issue got passed ASUS when they were doing their product tests, unless it was only a certain amounts of PCs effected. There's no way that every one of them would overheat like that after just a few minutes of gaming, and ASUS thought that would be an OK product to put on the market

About the Official answer on the GL502VS discharging Issue ( 6th gen ) , did anyone try for RMA, if so what options were you given?

Laptop is soon to be 2 years old and it's a shame nothing was fixed over this time, just 2 BIOS updates that changed nothing, discharge still present.

Hi guys! I currently have a problem with my CPU.

I have a GL502VM(K) since a year and already undervolted my i7 7700HQ to -125mV since the beginning, with temps between 70 and 80°C in general gaming, while most demanding games like AC Origins or The Witcher 3 push it at max. 85°C. All was good until the beginning of July, when I realized that my CPU was suddenly going insanely high despite the undervolt. Now in most demanding games like The Witcher 3 and KD:Deliverance my CPU goes up to 96°C, less demanding games like The Surge and Black Mirror push it to 90-92°C, Vampyr between 77°C and 87°C. Most of these games all run between 70-80°C before, so I can't understand what's the problem here.

GPU always runs between 67°C and max. 80°C (but usually stays at 75°C) and that's pretty good. Idle temps all also good, 45-50°C for CPU and 44-49°C for GPU. Room temperature is between 25°C and 35°C in summer and I don't have an air conditioner. You might say that the problem could be the room temp but last summer my undervolted CPU temps only went up to 85°C (in most demanding games).

I really can't detect the problem here. Fans are spinning like always, I even set those at 100% speed (5200rpm) from Gaming Center but didn't make much difference. What can I do to detect the problem and lower my CPU temps more?

Do you mean undervolt to -0.125mV right? Because you sait Overclock and that could be the reason. What software did you used to undervolt?
Possible reasons are something messed with your settings. Did you already tried to stop undervolt ?
Other possible problem is that because of those temperatures the Thermal paste performance dropped during the previous year and now demands a new repaste.
Is your laptop on the same position or place? The bottom ventilation needs to be perfect on these computers. Try to use it on a different place.

those temps u get are because of the summer .. not anything else.. u can avoid this by using throttlestop and limit the the frequancy for the 4 cores togther to 33 instead of 34 .. lower wil get u better temps

Hi,

I have air conditionner in the all house, around 21c .

4 months old, do you think i can do a repaste with MX4, without void warranty, or better to send them back.... Temp CPU 94max GPU 93max and go around CPU 89c GPU 86C and throttling to stay at this temp.... I read the 94 post of this thread,,, play with volt, cpu and gpu.

But it need to run great out of the box,

1800$ to mess with the setting,,,to expensive,,,, i have problem with asus claim ''Playing Asus ROG full speed , without throttling , with the new design heat sink pipe with 3 fan playing as long as you want, without problem like with regular asus no ROG.... i trigger ALT-F5 (change appear on screen) Overboost or Auto. do not make lot of change

Playing

World of warship full 75 fps
World of tank full 120 fps
Kingdom Come Deliverance 45 fps med-high

Hi,

Some Asus advertise,,,,and claim,,,

The Strix SCAR Edition has a specially-designed cooling system that improves airflow and system durability to keep you going during intense gaming sessions. (FPS drop, when throttling keep you out of session.)

The intelligent thermal design employs three fans that automatically adjust themselves to optimize CPU, GPU, and VRAM performance. (When it start i throttling the fan are not even at full speed) (No fan control to start sooner the fan before throttling)

The two main fans have been upgraded to 12V and spin much faster than regular 5V fans, boosting airflow and increasing air pressure to improve cooling efficiency — so you’ll keep a cool head even under fire! (the head not so cool, when throttling, some steam coming out of my ear.)

MULTIPLE COMPONENT COOLING
The unique heat-pipe design cools not only the CPU and GPU independently to avoid thermal throttling, but also keeps chipset power components below 85°C — increasing system reliability and lifespan. I'm more at 90c 91c when fan start making some quiet noise.)

Hi,

This to : Asus

To my: Asus GL703VM Scar edition

Could you please take all the hint, in this forum and include all in a new bios.

I had N76VZ GT650M for 4 years, and still running great now to this days. 2 years warranty...Even after warranty period end, you should try a recclaim. (on anything else you buy, more if it expensive.)

They have to change the board 2 time.

1st time - GPU weird graphic line in the screen while playing. (on warranty)
2nd time -GPU while playing the notebook restart with no start-up screen. (outside warranty period).

I tell to the tech/customer service about the law or principle , that a thing you buy should at least work for a reasonnable period time. And i don't play in a sandbox with it...:), So it's clean.

Depend on : the price you pay.
the quality of the thing you buy. (notebook is a quality thing)
if there a know issue (you find you are not alone search on the web)
how you use it, (use in a house).

Ex: Buying a jeep , going in a forest , and claim to dealer , that your paint is scratch.
or
Buying a jeep, your airbag system , stop working after warranty period 5 years , they should repair or fix it. It's a quality things, and emergency system , should be reliable.

The meaning of my statement , asus is a big company and should should stand back there product. Going by a better customer service....and understanding the customer claim.

Will resolve it the same way....
