[GL702VM & similar] Solution to Performance issues / Overheating / Throttling / Whine

onjax
Level 9
Hi guys, I bought GL702VM and was upset with its ability to handle games and high load. I had immediate temperature jump to over 85 jump and throttling / frame drops in games. So I decided to understand how to improve things, even though, I already lost my warranty due to my experiments, but at least I can answer for everyone, that:
- the main problem of this notebook is inefficient, insufficient cooling system with too thin fans, too small heatsinks, vent holes in a wrong places (aside, not above the fans).

To prove this, I first changed the thermal interface to liquid metal. That doesn't solve the issue. This proves, the thermal contact is ok, but heat dissipation is bad. Second, I ran stress tests with back cover removed - helped a lot, about 15-20 degrees off. The proves that air intake is wrong in this system.

I also removed an antidust tape with holes covering all the intake holes. That helped by around 5 degrees and also brought down air noise.

Then I came to idea of downvolting CPU and GPU, thanks to devs of ThrottleStop and MSI Afterburner, we can do this with relative ease.

The result: Fan noise reduced by half. Temp drop is huge. More speed due to ability of CPU/GPU to properly boost to max speed.

For your information - CPU is responsible for about 30% of heat, GPU - for 70%. So best idea is to undervolt the GPU, but for best results go for both.

THE GUIDE - CPU
Variant A - Install Intel Xtreme Tuning Utility

  • Go to Advanced Tuning tab and Change Dynamic CPU Voltage Offset to negative value (move slider to the left). -100mV is a good starting point. Leave Mode to Adaptive.
  • Apply changes.

My CPU holds -150mV well.

Variant B - Install Throttle Stop 8.3 or above

  • On main window click FIVR button
  • Under CPU Core Voltage move Offset Voltage slider to the left. -100mV is a good starting point. The lower value the less heat.
  • Click Apply. On the same window you can save settings to make them apply every time you start the app.

THE GUIDE - GPU

  • Download and Install MSI Afterburner 4.3 or above
  • In settings turn on Unlock voltage control and Unlock voltage monitoring
  • Close MSI Afterburner
  • Download my Voltage Profile for GTX 1060
  • Extract profile to some folder and then copy file to "C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner\Profiles". Click continue as Administrator when Windows asks permission to write.
  • Run MSI Afterburner, click on profile 1 (out of 5). Then press Ctrl+F. (1 - least heat, but may be unstable for some... 2, bit more voltage etc till 5.)
  • You will see my Voltage Curve (screenshot). What you'll see that it's flat until 1050mv. that means. 1050 will never be used, so will never be used any voltage except 831mV @ 1860 MHz and below.
  • Click apply to test this curve
  • If this curve is not stable for you - edit it to your taste: Click on 831mV dot and move it lower, so that lower freq will be used for that voltage, and for 1860 freq next available voltage will be used. Etc. Work with leftmost voltage dots to make everything stable.

This curve drops heat of GPU by at least 30%, which is huge.

THE GUIDE - COIL WHINE
Workaround described here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/975530

Perform only these steps as Administrator:
1. At a command prompt, run the following command:
reg add HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Processor /v Capabilities /t REG_DWORD /d 0x0007e066
2. Restart the computer.
3. Run ThrottleStop v8.3 or above and uncheck C1E. Click save.

In theory, it will make CPU a bit hotter while system is idle, because it disables some advanced C-states, but i didn't notice that in monitoring app.
That solved like 99.9% of the noise, and in addition, disabling C1E in ThrottleStop solved noise issue completely.

Hello Guys ,,

I Just Wanna Share My deep digging into GL702VM for two weeks
First when i bought this model , i was getting Temp Of 90 C for CPU and 85 C for GPU even with Casual gaming and using the cooling pad
So i found that thread and decided to try SOME of Solutions here with some of other Solutions i found too
You can see my results in the photos i attached 😄

I Tested some heavy games like The Division & BF 1
For BF 1 , there are some things i want u to notice first before i start with my setup of Mods
First of all , Under Very HEAVY Load for 5 Hours of GAMING >> the TEMP NEVER EVER reached 75 C for BOTH CPU & GPU
The Second Thing , You Can Notice That I Get +60 FPS On Ultra With DX12 Too
The Most Interesting Part >> You Can Notice That The Temp Can Drop To 50 C During Cut Scenes & Rise Slow after The Cut Scenes
Finally , The GPU Clock Also Drops as low as 200 MHZ in Cut Scenes >> Which is GOOD 😄

Now With The Mods I Made to my System To Get THOSE EPIC Results :

1- I DIDN'T MAKE ANY DRILLING , DIDN'T REMOVE DUST TAPE OR THAT FOIL TAPE TRICK >> JUST SOFTWARE MODS
1- I'm Using A Normal Coolling Pad
2- I'm Using MSI Afterburner 3rd Profile From OP
3- I'm UV CPU By - 150 Mv
4- I'm Using NBFC Profile & Set Fan Speed For All Fans At 75 %

5- In Nvidia CC , I did lot of work :
a- I disabled G Sync
b- Monitor Refresh >> Fixed
c- Power Management Mode >> Adaptive
d- Made A Custom Res 1920 x 1080 & Refresh Rate Of 60 Mhz " Instead Of 75 Mhz "

6- I Power Options I Choose Profile " Balanced " & " Better Performance " From Battery Icon
7- This The Most Part I Think That Helped ,, I Moded My Bios & Unlocked Some Hidden Menus ,, from there i Disabled the Turbo Boost Of CPU and Raised The Temp from where CPU Start to Throttle 😄

I'll Try to post later my hidden Bios Menu & other Benchmarks

Conclusion :
- This Laptop Now is very satisfying & it's Performance is above other models in the Market like Helios 300 Or Y720
In BF 1 I get Steady 70 - 80 FPS on Ultra
In The Division I get Steady 45 - 60 FPS on Ultra
In Watchdogs 2 I get Steady 45 - 50 FPS on Ultra
- Temp Is Now Controlled With Some Little Tricks >> Stay Under 75 C for Heavy Loads

Hope I Helped Some Of You Guys 😄

Have A Nice Gaming 😄

How did you manage to hack the bios? I edited the bios also but couldnt flash due to security verification. it basically will not allow me to flash the modified bios.

I have the same asus ROG laptop GL702VM and I did all the steps on here. I did the throttlestop settings and MSI afterburner settings but my laptop is still getting bad fps. Every time I start up any game like GTA V or Witcher 3, the game runs smoothly for the first 10 sec then it drops randomly and feels like 10-20 fps. I also noticed that when I enable turbo through throttlestop, my cpu speed gets stuck on 3.08 GHz when it should be boosted to 3.6 GHz. I would like some help because this is very frustrating.

amazing

reg add HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Processor /v Capabilities /t REG_DWORD /d 0x0007e066

i think this helped on the noise, but not sure the consequences on the long term.

i sure love you guys from this forum.
thank you onjax

I got a ASUS rog gl503vm and this the 2nd week since purchase. Had overheating issues since Day 1...within 20-30 mins of gaming, temp was 80-93 C... Did a couple of settings change..First installed intel XTU and Asus tuning utility to umdervolt the CPU.. did not work...2nd ... downgraded the "Maximum Processor rate to 75% and cpu's clock was at 2.3 ghz.. Ran games like witcher 3 and Ghost recon wildlands @45-50 fps, temp was within 65-70 C... then, increased Maximum Processor rate to 85% and cpu was running @ 2.6 Ghz... Ran games like witcher 3 and Ghost recon wildlands @50-60 fps, temp was within 65-74 C.. avg.68 C..3rd was to add the 5th option under the Advanced Power Options in Control Panel.."To change the performance of turbo boosting "... So as the first two options was not allowing the processor to run @ 100%.. so the i7-7700Hq @2.8 Ghz was taken as the full 100% , thus no turbo boost to 3.8 Ghz, adding the 5th option "to To change the performance of turbo boosting" allows me to keep maximum processor rate @ 100% and performance of the turbo boost<5th option> to "Efficiently enabled", gave me a result of CPU @ 3.4 Ghz and GPU @ 1900 Mhz, with temps around 68-77 C.. frame rates were higher in BF1, Witcher 3,@ Very High Sttngs... ran smooth for more than 1 hour.. no crash or lag.....i am planning to get an Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut for repaste the CPU and GPU, with two Opolar LC06 fans... Kindly let me know, if any other suggestions.

Turbo Boost option under power settings does the trick mainly..:) ;)Attache d the screenshot

Undervolt the GPU. Makes a huge difference.

Can someone please tell me what is the purpose of this tape and if i can remove it?

dust cover since it's on the air intake part of the laptop. i left mine alone, it would be a hassle to have to clean that part every month.

try 0.100 undervolt, no effect

have you turn off turboboost yet?

And it's throttling at precise timed intervals.

Can anyone explain this?

I have it at 99% min max cpu in power options, not that seems to be a problem.

Thank you.

that's weird, i had drops too, but from what i see in your graph is that your drops is actually much milder than mine was. and clearly you don't have temp issue... have you changed the gpu power profile to "maximum performance" yet in nvidia drivers?
try installing nvidia drivers that is labeled "last stable driver"(i'm still using 398.11), and try not to install nvidia experience.
did you reapply your laptop's thermal paste? if you did, are you sure it's reapplied to all the parts perfectly?

I thought it was a tape that transfer heat from the VRM. This tape is blocking the air. I made a fan that pushes air into my laptop, i will remove the tape and see the results.

I use low setting in game, and G-force experience.
I didn't change maximum performance, don't know where that is.
Driver, 411.36, current.
I just got my motherboard changed by Asus guys here in my city, I went to a Asus factory, and got my motherboard switch out cause the keyboard conked on me.
They reapplied thermal everything recently, I had the same issue before the motherboard swap, so the thermal pasting is not an issue, and the heat is not an issue, soo.

But as me and you see, in my situation it's not heat causing the throttling, something else is going on, they are timed perfectly.
This is weird, maybe there's a bigger issue? and people are blaming heat, only because when we game it's naturally hot, so that's the simplest answer.

people need to play games that keep the laptop at 60 to 70 degrees, and monitor their GPU throttling, if we see more of this, it's not a thermal heating issue.

I'm very suspicious that something else is going on after discovering this, I need to contact Asus about this.

Thank you.
