[GL702VM & similar] Solution to Performance issues / Overheating / Throttling / Whine

Hi guys, I bought GL702VM and was upset with its ability to handle games and high load. I had immediate temperature jump to over 85 jump and throttling / frame drops in games. So I decided to understand how to improve things, even though, I already lost my warranty due to my experiments, but at least I can answer for everyone, that:
- the main problem of this notebook is inefficient, insufficient cooling system with too thin fans, too small heatsinks, vent holes in a wrong places (aside, not above the fans).

To prove this, I first changed the thermal interface to liquid metal. That doesn't solve the issue. This proves, the thermal contact is ok, but heat dissipation is bad. Second, I ran stress tests with back cover removed - helped a lot, about 15-20 degrees off. The proves that air intake is wrong in this system.

I also removed an antidust tape with holes covering all the intake holes. That helped by around 5 degrees and also brought down air noise.

Then I came to idea of downvolting CPU and GPU, thanks to devs of ThrottleStop and MSI Afterburner, we can do this with relative ease.

The result: Fan noise reduced by half. Temp drop is huge. More speed due to ability of CPU/GPU to properly boost to max speed.

For your information - CPU is responsible for about 30% of heat, GPU - for 70%. So best idea is to undervolt the GPU, but for best results go for both.

THE GUIDE - CPU
Variant A - Install Intel Xtreme Tuning Utility

• Go to Advanced Tuning tab and Change Dynamic CPU Voltage Offset to negative value (move slider to the left). -100mV is a good starting point. Leave Mode to Adaptive.
  
• Apply changes.
  

My CPU holds -150mV well.

Variant B - Install Throttle Stop 8.3 or above

• On main window click FIVR button
  
• Under CPU Core Voltage move Offset Voltage slider to the left. -100mV is a good starting point. The lower value the less heat.
  
• Click Apply. On the same window you can save settings to make them apply every time you start the app.
  

THE GUIDE - GPU

• Download and Install MSI Afterburner 4.3 or above
  
• In settings turn on Unlock voltage control and Unlock voltage monitoring
  
• Close MSI Afterburner
  
• Download my Voltage Profile for GTX 1060
  
• Extract profile to some folder and then copy file to "C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner\Profiles". Click continue as Administrator when Windows asks permission to write.
  
• Run MSI Afterburner, click on profile 1 (out of 5). Then press Ctrl+F. (1 - least heat, but may be unstable for some... 2, bit more voltage etc till 5.)
  
• You will see my Voltage Curve (screenshot). What you'll see that it's flat until 1050mv. that means. 1050 will never be used, so will never be used any voltage except 831mV @ 1860 MHz and below.
  
• Click apply to test this curve
  
• If this curve is not stable for you - edit it to your taste: Click on 831mV dot and move it lower, so that lower freq will be used for that voltage, and for 1860 freq next available voltage will be used. Etc. Work with leftmost voltage dots to make everything stable.
  

This curve drops heat of GPU by at least 30%, which is huge.

THE GUIDE - COIL WHINE

Perform only these steps as Administrator:
1. At a command prompt, run the following command:
reg add HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Processor /v Capabilities /t REG_DWORD /d 0x0007e066
2. Restart the computer.
3. Run ThrottleStop v8.3 or above and uncheck C1E. Click save.

In theory, it will make CPU a bit hotter while system is idle, because it disables some advanced C-states, but i didn't notice that in monitoring app.
That solved like 99.9% of the noise, and in addition, disabling C1E in ThrottleStop solved noise issue completely.

The GL502VM doesn't have a 3rd fan. They added the 3rd fan for the bigger GL702VM. Trust me, you're not missing much. The fan was such an afterthought that it hardly does anything (though Asus advertises it like it's some awesome thing, lol).

Oh and your idle temps look a little high (this depends heavily on your ambient temp of your room) but it's not really going to hurt anything. But just to make sure, open up task manager, sort by CPU percentage highest to lowest, and make sure you don't have something in the background that's pinging your cpu unnecessarily. When sitting completely idle, hands off the keyboard and mouse, it should hover around 0-2% on avg (see attached for example).




P.S. It shows USB 2.0 supported for me as well. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Try transferring a large single file from a usb 3.0 usb drive to your desktop and see if it holds up to usb 3.0 speeds. I would do it but I don't have any usb 3.0 devices.

Don't because it will scratch your laptop. The skin for backside it is already pre-cut.

Don't expect they pre-cut it perfectly but they only miss few mm.

These are the tools i used.


if you want to cut everything yourself. First you have to stencil with bond paper. Before stencil, rub it with fingers or flat part of your nail so that it will take shape and clearer result when stencil. if you have softer paper the better. Now the paper your stencil with is a template. 🙂

Another question:

This laptop can´t handle Rise of Tomb Raider on Very High Settings? On high settings its ok, but on very high very low fps. I used vertical sync with double buffering and tripple and same.
Geforce experience recommends me put it in very high.

Another game with problems its Borderlands 2. If i put Physx on medium or high, the fps goes down. On low, ok. I test on 1080p, but geforce experice recommends all on high and 4k resolution (DRS RESOLUTION).

I know that the PC is complicated, but a 1.500€ laptop and can´t handle a game from 2016 and of course borderlands from 2012?.

My laptop have a fresh install of windows 10 and last drivers from

I've noticed the same fps problem, I've kind of a conclusion because it only happens with open worlds, it can be due to the GSYNC or where do you have the game installed, if you have it on the HDD it will low your fps when loading new zones but if you have it on the SSD that should be not big problem, try to play open games on SSD and without GSYNC, I havent try it yet but it could work.

I have the games in the sdd, but that is not the problem since I do not have low fps when entering a new area. In Tomb raider or Borderlands, there are areas that if I look back where there is less to render, the game shows correct fps. But when I turn the camera and have to render a larger area, the laptop does not have enough power. G-sync its not the problem. I play by hdmi to the TV and I have disabled the option also in the laptop since there are games that do not go well (Like the Rayman legends). I tested with the "normal" and high performance power plan on windows. I've put in the nvidia control panel Prefered high performance. All the same. In Borderlans 2, the problem is the NVidia Physx. But a 1060 geforce should be more than enough. A friend has bought a PC (not a laptop) with the same features as the GL502VM / GL702VM (i7 and gt1060) and everything is perfect.

Of course, you can say "if you don´t like it, buy a Ps4". But i think we deserve a better value for thay money.

Finally, anybody with template for the holes of bottom?

Try resetting your settings to default in the geforce control panel. Btw, you should expect a 10% fps difference compared to the desktop 1060.

Hey guys. i bought this vacuum cooler and installed it on the GPU side(GPU vent on the right side, correct?)


When gaming my temp is still on 80-81 degrees C because i think it is sucking most of the air through here.


So i try plugging it with these foams.


It gets cooler about 3-4 degrees, im happy as long as it is below 80 degrees.


I will do some more testing with and without plugging, to make it certain even though it is obvious.

My CPU is just below 70 degrees when gaming, thanks to Intel ETU and power plan on 99%.

I think you need bigger holes (that sounds weird) to get more air inside, put something under the back of your laptop it will help getting cooler air inside.
Do you have notebook fancontrol also ?

I am running now on BF1 @ highest settings CPU/GPU 74/73 maximum temperatures.
This is with -130 undervolt , 99% processor so no boost, MSI afterburner and notebook fancontrol.
Drilled big holes and lifted up the back of laptop with 2cm's with a piece of rubber.
