[GL702VM & similar] Solution to Performance issues / Overheating / Throttling / Whine

onjax
Level 9
Hi guys, I bought GL702VM and was upset with its ability to handle games and high load. I had immediate temperature jump to over 85 jump and throttling / frame drops in games. So I decided to understand how to improve things, even though, I already lost my warranty due to my experiments, but at least I can answer for everyone, that:
- the main problem of this notebook is inefficient, insufficient cooling system with too thin fans, too small heatsinks, vent holes in a wrong places (aside, not above the fans).

To prove this, I first changed the thermal interface to liquid metal. That doesn't solve the issue. This proves, the thermal contact is ok, but heat dissipation is bad. Second, I ran stress tests with back cover removed - helped a lot, about 15-20 degrees off. The proves that air intake is wrong in this system.

I also removed an antidust tape with holes covering all the intake holes. That helped by around 5 degrees and also brought down air noise.

Then I came to idea of downvolting CPU and GPU, thanks to devs of ThrottleStop and MSI Afterburner, we can do this with relative ease.

The result: Fan noise reduced by half. Temp drop is huge. More speed due to ability of CPU/GPU to properly boost to max speed.

For your information - CPU is responsible for about 30% of heat, GPU - for 70%. So best idea is to undervolt the GPU, but for best results go for both.

THE GUIDE - CPU
Variant A - Install Intel Xtreme Tuning Utility

  • Go to Advanced Tuning tab and Change Dynamic CPU Voltage Offset to negative value (move slider to the left). -100mV is a good starting point. Leave Mode to Adaptive.
  • Apply changes.

My CPU holds -150mV well.

Variant B - Install Throttle Stop 8.3 or above

  • On main window click FIVR button
  • Under CPU Core Voltage move Offset Voltage slider to the left. -100mV is a good starting point. The lower value the less heat.
  • Click Apply. On the same window you can save settings to make them apply every time you start the app.

THE GUIDE - GPU

  • Download and Install MSI Afterburner 4.3 or above
  • In settings turn on Unlock voltage control and Unlock voltage monitoring
  • Close MSI Afterburner
  • Download my Voltage Profile for GTX 1060
  • Extract profile to some folder and then copy file to "C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner\Profiles". Click continue as Administrator when Windows asks permission to write.
  • Run MSI Afterburner, click on profile 1 (out of 5). Then press Ctrl+F. (1 - least heat, but may be unstable for some... 2, bit more voltage etc till 5.)
  • You will see my Voltage Curve (screenshot). What you'll see that it's flat until 1050mv. that means. 1050 will never be used, so will never be used any voltage except 831mV @ 1860 MHz and below.
  • Click apply to test this curve
  • If this curve is not stable for you - edit it to your taste: Click on 831mV dot and move it lower, so that lower freq will be used for that voltage, and for 1860 freq next available voltage will be used. Etc. Work with leftmost voltage dots to make everything stable.

This curve drops heat of GPU by at least 30%, which is huge.

THE GUIDE - COIL WHINE
Workaround described here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/975530

Perform only these steps as Administrator:
1. At a command prompt, run the following command:
reg add HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Processor /v Capabilities /t REG_DWORD /d 0x0007e066
2. Restart the computer.
3. Run ThrottleStop v8.3 or above and uncheck C1E. Click save.

In theory, it will make CPU a bit hotter while system is idle, because it disables some advanced C-states, but i didn't notice that in monitoring app.
That solved like 99.9% of the noise, and in addition, disabling C1E in ThrottleStop solved noise issue completely.

Yep everything is stock - no undervolting of the cpu/gpu. I know what you mean - i googled for a bottom case and found one for approx 40 pounds so I thought if it goes wrong least i can get a replacement. But honestly, the days of hitting 83-84c are gone - the max ive had it 76c and that only lasts for a few seconds before it drops back. between 70-73c is the average im getting

That's awesome! Sorry, I have one last question for you. How did you go about attaching the mesh?

easy.....with the undercover off i just cut it to size (cut it in a square shape just bigger than the hole) then used a gluegun - a small amount of glue is all thats needed on all 4 corners of the mesh square (i guess any glue would be ok I had a gluegun so used that)

Here a pic of my undercover now - If you just drill out the 2 main fans then that should be fine - I went the extra hog and drilled a hole for the third fan but since doing it it hasnt spun up (after some googling it turns out this is a 'boost fan' that comes on after sustained GPU use but as my temps never get above 75c i doubt it will ever come on)

I also cut out the rectangle as I had some mesh left over but again, my temps are still around 75c. So I would start with the 2 main fans first

How I did it? I started by using some duck tape and cut a circle of tape the same size as the fan. I then put this over the fan sticky side up and put the case on top then pressed down on the fan. The tape then stuck to the case which gave me a template to cut out.

The mesh I bought from amazon for £2.99 - 30 mesh (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Stainless-Steel-Woven-sizes-Aperture/dp/B00AWQZ47G/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1...)

Pics attached of the case and screenshot of my temps (just to add the GPU is overclocked with MSI and im still only hitting 73c flat out) - since the mod the GPU hasnt gone above 75c and CPU hovers around 68c

This is amazing 😄
I wish i could do something like this, but not for my slick hands )))

Isn't it dangerous to run them 100%?
my fans turn at 5200 rpm, it's too much I think !!

I doubt Asus would give you the option to set them to 'max' in the ROG software if it was beyond spec.

I've drilled my GL702VM and my temps never go above 75c 🙂

Is that with other tweaks, or is that with stock settings? What were your temps at before the drill?

I'm using an Asus ROG Strix GL702VM-DS74-HID1 Titanium Gold 17.3" G-SYNC i7-7700HQ 2.8-3.8GHz (FHD/1060 6G/SATA 128G SSD+1T HDD/16GB RAM). I do everything onjax said up until Step 4 but my profiles in MSI Afterburner just stay grey-ed out like this: https://puu.sh/vJIpd/fe8acf4229.png and I can't seem to be able to click any of them. Anyone know what the problem might be? I even tried deleting the other profiles in the MSI Afterburner Profiles folder leaving only the one onjax provided and it still doesn't work. I also tried buying an Opolar cooler but I can't seem to be able to set it up since my laptop screen pushes it off when I lift it up (the vents are on the back of the laptop). There is no way I can force it to stay there and I've tried multiple ways. I was getting 90-91C out of the box playing overwatch on Ultra settings. Since I couldn't use the Opolar and I can't set up MSI Afterburner the way onjax suggested, I tried only disabling the boost on my processor and using a cooling pad. The changes are that now max temp I get is 82C playing Overwatch on Ultra and the performance is the same. I'm getting ~60C temp with twitch.tv open on best quality and surfing through google chrome with multiple tabs open. On Idle(without me doing anything on the laptop) the best it goes down to is ~45C. Aren't these temperatures a bit high, do I have anything to worry about and am I the only one having issues with setting up the MSI Afterburner? Thanks for the help in advance.

I have the same model laptop. I believe the issue you're having with the greyed out profiles in afterburner have to do with file permissions on the CFG file. Try giving everyone and system full control on this file.

I also use an Opolar LC06 and a Cooler Master NotePal X-Slim cooling pad with mine. With the Opolar set to auto and the x-slim turned on my system idles at about 36C and I don't really see my temperatures go much passed 70/71C when gaming. I'll turn my Opolar LC06 up to about 8 or 10 before firing a game up. This seems to work quite well.

I tried giving full control for everyone on the cfg file but that still doesn't help, the profiles are still greyed out. 😞
And how do you get the Opolar to stay there? when I put it on the vents and lift the screen, the Opolar literally gets pushed off of the vent and let's say it does nothing afterwards.

try taking ownership of the file. I had the same issue until I did this and played with the permission of file.

You need to mount the Opolar so the lid doesn't effect it's position too much. You kinda just have to screw with it but I can assure you it works.

Thank you for the picture and the info so far. I tried taking ownership but it still doesn't do it for me.. I guess I'm not gonna be able to deal with that but I find it impossible to setup the Opolar, which color silicon thing are you using?
