Please join thread LETTER TO ASUS FOR ADDRESSING GL504 SERIES PROBLEMS [PLEASE SIGN]

So, here is my GL504GM/GS guide I profound myself while using it extensively in different configurations.
This thread is INTENDED TO GAIN ATTENTION FROM ASUS ENGINEERS! GUYS, PLEASE HELP US GET THIS BEAUTY TO WORK!

DISCLAIMER! DO IT ON YOUR OWN RISK! IT IS NOT SAFE! IT CAN (AND IT WILL) VOID YOUR WARRANTY!

Basic information:
ASUS GL504GS Downloads page
Current (23/11/2018) is BIOS 305!

The microstuttering, lags and freezes

Let’s get it point-by-point, because there is a single problem which is consist of different cases.

The CPU

So, our 8750H is a hot one (relatively to similar mobile solutions), let’s analyze its role in our headaches :

Throttling: understanding Thermal (THER) and Power Limit (PM) throttling

So the basic approach is to check whenever it takes place on your laptop. The best tool is Intel XTU, please do the following:

  • Install Intel XTU
  • Add graphs for all available throttling (Power Limit, Temp)
  • Go and play
  • Periodically check what is up with graph

See? If it’s not PMed, then it is TEMPed. What to do?
[EASY SOLUTION]

Change your power plan, by modifying power to CPU from 100% to 99% and totally lock Turbo Boost. It’s a solid solution which will sacrifice raw power in matter of better (way better Temps), and way lower noise.

[MEDIJM SOLUTION]

Use XTU to downvolt CPU, by lowering core voltage.

[HEAVY DUTY SOLUTION]

Disassemble and repast ALL thermals in your laptop. Check this video for guidance:

[ULTIMATE SOLUTION]

Do all above (except easy one), and...

... download the shell.efi, and modify some variables by loading shell in disabled secured boot in UEFI.

The Nahimic solution

Do fresh windows install, and DO NOT INSTALL NAHIMIC and Sonic Studio.

FAQ:

: Cooling Pad or unflat position leads to significant FPS drops and/or stuttering
Mentioned here: https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?105890-Strix-Scar-II-Cooling-Pad-Causes-FPS-Drop-Terribly
: Reason is interconnected with adaptable cooling algorithms which ASUS itself realized by using leveraged way. So until SOME temp is reached (ex. 80c), fans are not kicking in – on border temp 79c system struggles with power limit and/or temperature throttling. Additional cooling distort variables on which such algorhytms are based, and significantly affects fans workaround. So it’s ok, if GL504 ran faster on higher temps.

Shortly: Cooling pad is distorting pre-defined cooling algorithms (also known as FAN CURVES). It won't help you with temps, they WILL stood the same, but you will reduce noise.

: What is GRUB? And what's it for? And how to GRUB?
: GRUB is external EFI shell, that gives you an ability to change variables of settings in UEFI-BIOS of our GL504GS/GM, without modifying BIOS itself.
ASUS GL504GS BIOS unlock thread, and GRUBing guide

: I can't install basic touchpad drivers after windows fresh install!
: Please install basic Intel Serial I/O driver from ASUS download page.

: I just bought my laptop 2 weeks ago, and i playing every games the gpu/cpu temp around 85-90°. Is that normal for this laptop?
: There are two types of answers ...
The short one - YES, that is probably fine, make sure Overboost is on, so heat dissipation is on its maximum.
The long one ...
Current thermal management of Intel processors is really complicated things. Especially in terms of Turbo Boost and adaptive cooling. Intel have done a great work making their processor as cool is possible under low load, and as powerful as possible in high load under. Unfortunately, ASUS engineers didn't spend enough time to get it cooling system (very well designed, though!) to correctly. If you're not experiencing significant performance drops - please switch Maximum Processor State to 99%, so you will be able to SIGNIFICANTLY reduce temperatures and noise level.

: Cann't find any info about different models...Does this model actually have 144Hz display or not?
: All GL504GS/GM are equiped with 144Hz screen.

Hi I have same GL504GS with upgrade 16x2 2666 Ram stick for dual channel usage
about temp I found solution about how to slow fanspeed but this method will not fix all case anyway:p
First I monitor temp for each Application I usage if normal usage like Coding internet Youtube Facebook I try to silent profile. no fan noise.
but when playgame with silent profile it another story CPU temp keep from 75c to 90c depend on how long you playing. cause from CPU and GPU.
and sometime they force close application eg. World of Tank, Overwatch but after I try to use ThrottleStop version 8.70
and config something like this
1.1 setting screen only check
- Speed Shift EEP 128 SST
- Speed Step
- C1E
1.2 click to FIVR button
- Set CPU core / Cache to -125.0 offset
- Fix Turbo 6-5 Core 34 / 4 Core 35 / 3 2 and 1 to 36
- Click Save Volt
1.3 (Optional) Set Windows Task Scheduler to start ThrottleStop to every log on
1.4 (Optional )Set Option to start minimize

then with silent profile enable play everygame I never hear fan kick in again
Max temp are sit on 81 CPU / 80 GPU
AVG temp are sit on 40 - 75 both GPU/CPU

*Problem I found if I used ThrottleStop Rog command center not show Mhz CPU (0Mhz alltime)
to fix this need to uninstall ROG command center and reinstall again

now I happy to play this game again

Please note** this method is slow down full SPEC of your CPU but not GPU
when CPU/GPU not throttle FPS will spike like crazy but if keep cool AVG are low but stable
OW stable EPIC render 100% 120fps
WOT stable Ultra setting drop some AA 144fps all time

not test other

sorry for bad english.

I did a little bit of research and i decided to undevolt my GPU with MSI Afterburner by adjusting the Voltage/Frequency Curve. I was able to undervolt my GTX 1060 to 0,900 by leveling the "dots" up to 1924MHz. This gave me a little overclocking effect as well and eliminated power and voltage limitations my GPU was suffering from.

Long story short, my GPU temps stays around 70 degrees and because the cooling system of the GL504GM has shared heatpipes, this decrease of GPU temps also affects the CPU, which stays now at 77 degrees avg. I think thats very usefull as the GL504GM is not very undervolting friendly when it comes to the CPU.

Thats a good solution to deal with this ****ty fan settings and the high temps til ASUS finally delivers a software update.

This is the video i used:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpIkYr9aDc8&t=247s

I tweaked my GL504GM Hero 2 a bit more during the days and i ended up with the GPU undervolted with -88 and temps around 76 degrees and the CPU undervolted with -82 and temps around 83 degrees. I activated Speed Shift EPP in Throttlestop and set the value to 32, so the CPU stays at the 3,9GHz clock.

But i still got FPS around 65 in games like BF V. Without any throttling shown in HWinfo. So i did a bit of research and found out that the difference in FPS between single and dual Channel RAM in games with a high CPU demand like BF V, is huge, up to 30fps more. I have a single channel RAM and i am thinking about to do an upgrade to dual channel. So instead of 1x8gb i will buy another 8gb RAM. Did one of you guys experience the same, FPS boost in games with a high demand on the CPU?

Thats the video i found, there are plenty of others as well.

Yes, that's why i switched for 2*8Gb modules. SK Hynix from stock setup is crap.

Did this give you any improvements due to FPS?
I was thinking to buy just another 8gb of RAM and add it to the current one. From your answer i assume you switched them entirely? Cant i use the SK Hynix and add idk a kingston hyperX?

Which one did you build in?

Yes, it did; - depends on title.

HyperX, propably on Micron chips, which are pretty nice.

I'm on G.Skill RipJaws that are on Samsung.

Ah ok. So you would recommand to have 2 Ram sticks of the same company?

How is your system (you have a Hero 2 right?) running right now in general? Heat Management, fps etc?

Regards

It's really hard to pair RAM module to existing one from my point of view.

I have GL504GS (SCAR II GTX 1070), my laptop is liquid metaled and thermal padded (both ThermalGrizzly).

I have better performance in terms of FPS, and stay under 85, or 90C under REALLY HEAVY LOAD.
I'm also suffer from sttutering and microfreezes, even under voltmods. Unfortunately.

I tried yesterday with my GS but I did not notice any different... 😕

Try the last solution posted in this post. Will try this as well later on. Else on mine I updated to the latest driver listed in ASUS' downloads and at times slide the right speaker balance in sound settings

https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?107024-GL504GM-built-in-speaker-volume-fluctuating-loud-so...

Here are some results I d like to share.
Yesterday I tried the external fan cooler OPOLAR in my scar ii in SILENT MODE. Here it is the picture of it..
79434
It costs 26 dollars in Amazon.

My laptop has presented massive fps drops while playing BF IV, here it is the graph of the MSI afterburn for GPU temps and framerate. We can observe that the FPS drops are correlated with a cooling of the GPU.
79435

And now, in the figure bellow we can see the same info but using the OPOLAR external fan. I havent experienced any FPS drop while using the external fan. It is really impressive that the really noisy fans of the scar ii are not enough for cooling the GPU\CPU.
I think that the repaste can solve the issue, as commented in the original post . But I am afraid to void my warranty.
I ve already tried undervolting GPU and CPU and some other things, but nothing really worked as this external fan worked.
