GL502VS Battery drain when gaming (on AC power)

Hi,

I picked up an Asus GL502VS a few days ago and I'm very impressed with the overall system.

One thing that does bother me is the slow battery draw (even on AC power) when the system is used for VR and heavy gaming. With the power adapter plugged in, I'm noticing around 10% battery drain per hour of gameplay.

Is this normal? I would have preferred the power adapter to supply enough power that it wouldn't need to draw the battery down.

I can recommend MSI, i have had an MSI as my last gaming laptop, never had an issue with it to be honest -it wasnt even from the top tier laptops like the GT series-
You can also check out the new AleinWare, they seem like an awesome choice. Especially the 15 inch ones.

As for the G series, check out the forum for this Series, plenty of problems mate, overheating etc etc.

Thanks for the info. I almost bought the MSI GT63VR today, but I balked because I have never owned one and read online they run pretty hot. It was on sale too. I'll check into the Alienware. I just wish Asus would have shipped the 502 with a bigger power supply.

I guess I trust the chassis of the G752VS more because I have been using an Asus G73 for the past 7 years so I'm convinced in the cooling design.

No problem.
The problem with the G series is the CPU voltage "According to users".
It is running hot same as the GL series here.
As for the GT series. I really tend to disagree, this specific series is the BEST in terms of cooling, just look at a gameplay for battlefield on one of those devices. or check the notebookcheck review, the temp was 60-70 while the asus GL had 90 !!!
you cant get cooling wrong with that.
the AW has 10 degrees less than the best asus GL502vs i have seen. "MobileTech" review with Lisa.

Both are good at the end "GT and AW".
I like the AW design alot more though ! it is just amazing.
oh and before i forget, Shame on you ASUS, first and last laptop from you. worst engineering i have seen in ages .

I've settled for the Alienware 15.
I might pay 300$ more, but hey, at least they gave their customers a proper adapter after they realized their mistake.

Sadly, MSI does not have warranty in my country. Plus they do overheat above 80.

Well guys, I bought the MSI GT62VR-6RE. It was even on sale $50 cheaper than the Asus GL502 I returned.

I can't say enough about this computer... It's absolutely amazing. I love it. Thanks for the advice on MSI man.

Boy was I wrong about the cooling on MSI. With the back end propped up an inch for airflow and the cooling boost button pressed to put the fans at max, my CPU and GPU maintained at about 41 degrees Celcius while gaming in World of Warcraft on Ultra settings... And I wasn't playing in a refrigerator either.

What are the temperatures like? I mean under heavy load? (WoW doesnt count:)) Hows the battery life? Can you provide the exact model?

GT62VR 6RE-025CA Dominator Pro w/ Core i7-6700HQ, 16GB, 256GB SSD + 1TB, 15.6in Full HD, GTX 1070, Windows 10

I ran some Inigine Heavens benchmarks and the highest my temp got was maybe 47 degrees Celsius. Battery life just doing some regular web stuff says 3 hours when you turn on battery saver. If you are gaming, I think it's around an hour but I usually plug it in when I'm doing that. I think my card is under-performing a bit and I'm guessing it's driver or software related. The online reviews I read are getting higher benchmarks from the Inigine heaven run, but I will get it sorted out. I doubt it's hardware related. Great laptop, awesome cooling. I'm very happy with it.


*edit... I feel like a total noob, but I solved my poor performance problem. Apparently MSI has pre-set tuning overclock and under clock modes called the MSI shift modes. There is Sport, Comfort, and ECO. I inadvertently had it set on ECO mode I think. As soon as I actually selected Sport mode, I more than doubled my frame rates and Heaven scores. The max temp in the test was 66 degrees Celsius.

Could someone take their battery down to like 5%, plug it in, start up a demanding game and see how the laptop behaves? You might have to edit the power settings to disable the reserve space and the action to sleep/power down the laptop when low. In other words set it to let it die.

Try that and report back if it survives.

I don't have this problem which means I dont play demanding enough games. I'm playing doom lately and even on ultra the GPU and CPU are running at very low utilization. I dont play wow or witcher or things like that so I can't be of help here.

Today I've been running benchmarks with the battery starting at 10%. I've done the 3dgeeks 3d test, doom, crysis 2 and crysis 2 benchmark tool. My battery is charging, currently at 28% after an hour of play. CPU at 70c gpu at 80c.
