"Recommended" in the ASUS online dowload section.
Should I update? Keyboard and lights are working fine except some random keys delays when I start typing...
I see no updates under official tools Armoury Crate or MyASUS.

Nobody installed this?

I finally got up the courage to try this dangerous (?) update... it took a long time (something like 8 minutes!) but ended up fine (except a logged C:\Program Files (x86)\LightingService\LightingService.exe crash, but that's sadly normal with some ASUS tasks non properly quitting in a clean way on update). I also tried sleep and resume and the keyboard LEDs are fine.

I updated it now. Everything's okay.
My issue with this G18 is that when I put it to sleep but before it goes to sleep I close the lid, when it wakes up, there's a high probability that the customizable hotkeys won't work, thus requiring a full shut down (not restart) to get them back running.
I also think that this happens even if I don't put it to sleep, but close the lid, in certain situations (I don't know yet which).
Then, if this keeps going on and I keep closing the lid, eventually the keyboard won't work anymore. Only the mouse/touchpad, so I have to restart (or shut down basically to get hotkeys back as well). I reported this to them but they didn't care (no real reply about it, etc., it's been over 6 months).
Never had any issue with Lenovo in the past. Asus doesn't really know how to fix bugs, but they do know how to cause them.
Let's see if this keyboard firmware addresses that.

Yes, lid closing causing strange behavior is a common experience on many laptops. All I can say from my experience is that it usually depends on drivers, MS updates, pre-installed (buggy) software. You could try first a reproducible pattern and then start hunting the cause (drivers, buggy software, mainly) by exclusion ( = disable startup programs etc.). On my previous ASUS GL703GS it sometimes randomly happened it didn't wake up correctly: black lit screen, Windows not actually working with everything freezed and not responding closing lid again or pressing special keys. In the end it was a buggy Intel WiFi driver: since I downgraded it never happened again...
In your case I'd go for ASUS software controlling customized keys (it usually installs also a driver and you'll see an additional keyboard device under Device Manager to control extra keyboard keys) or some other driver in conflict (typically it's a conflicting driver that can cause black screen and resume issues...).
My advice is to have a conservative approach with drivers: don't always install latest WiFi etc. drivers if you don't have any issue. "If it ain't broke don't fix it" 😉
Luckily enough I must say this SCAR 18 G834JY is just perfect and never had a single problem on resume after closing the lid before/after sleep/hibernation and any other action combo for days without a reboot... nor with keyboard or RGB leds... always worked as expected till now! 🤞🏻
