G75 random freezes (crashes)

Hey all,

i just bought the european version of the asus g75 and i am experiencing som rather anoying problems.
for starters my computer doesn't seem quite as fast, having problems even with older games like crysis and borderlands.

the second big issue is that my battery isn't powerful enough to power the machine on high performance mode, inducing screen flickers and massive fps drops.

the battery thing is fixed when i plug it in, so i come to my biggest concern; my computer freezes up and crashes on random occasions, even when 'im not even using 10% of the thing's capability's!

i really hope anyone has a solution for these problems, especialy the first and last one...

Thanks in advance!

1) McAfee Antivirus causes DPC Latency spikes on these G75 and G55 systems, crippling their performance (see http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?14960-G75VW-random-audio-and-graphics-spike). If McAfee is running on your system, I recommend to uninstall it and load up another Antivirus product. If you aren't running McAfee Antivirus, it may still be worthwhile to troubleshoot with DPC Latency Checker, as some other driver in another program you've installed may be causing the performance problem.

You should also confirm you are using the Power4Gear "Performance" power setting, rather than "Quiet Office" or "Battery Saving".

2) It is true the battery is not powerful enough to power the laptop on maximum performance settings (see http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?24700-G75VW-Lag-when-on-battery&country=&status=). I suppose ASUS could've designed the laptop to use a more powerful battery, but then you would likely need an additional sack of cash to purchase it and a hand truck to move it around.

3) For the freezing and crashing, I recommend performing an F9 ASUS Factory Restore (press F9 at the ASUS splash screen and follow the directions to restore Windows to the 1st partition). This will complelely overwirite the C: drive, so backup any important files you've stored there. Install as lilttle as possible to attempt reproduction of your freezing and crashing issue. If these issues persist, it is likely the laptop is defective. You should then return it to your retailer to exchange for a new G75, or a complete refund.

If you wish to troubleshoot further, load up memtest86+ and test the memory on your laptop. Memory errors can result in random freezes and crashes.

what do you mean with splash screen?

Here's a thread from another user running Bullguard Antivirus and also reporting performance problems: http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?21701-I-never-saw-a-slower-laptop-than-this.&highlight=bull.... I'd probably uninstall that as well and see if your behavior changes. Microsoft Security Essentials has few problem reports. I'd install that if you want to keep virus protection while troubleshooting.

I've also read threads where UNinstalling ASUS Bloatware led to system stablity issues. I prefer to leave the ASUS Bloatware alone or (much better) choose to do a completely clean Windows installation if stability is a problem.

The ASUS splash screen is the first screen you see when you start up your laptop. It's a funny name, but it is the technical term to describe it...

http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?24138-Step-by-step-for-clean-install&highlight=mydigitallif... will show you where to obtain a legitimate, free copy of Windows 7 /SP1 and how to install and activate the new installation.

Booting into a Linux "LiveCD" distribution is another way to determine if your crashes are hardware or software-caused without having to change anything on your SSD or HDD.

Not to worry, the G75 was voted the "Best Paperweight of 2012" by Paperweight Warehouse...
