[G46vw] Touchpad disble fn+f9 - Support question

generic

hi there,

On the G46vw there is a key combination to enable or disable the touch-pad. I have tried this and it does not work. All of the other fn+ keys work correctly (e.g backlit keyboard, volume, mute, brightness etc).

This makes playing games pretty much impossible! The wrists or clothes touch the touch-pad and the cursor flys away and I end up shooting in the wrong direction.

I have tried TouchFreeze as a work around, but sadly on one game it disables the touchpad and mouse buttons whilst using the keyboard, so I can only shoot whilst stationary LOL. ( The game is Xonotic).

I tried to disable the touch-pad in Device Manager, but the Disable button is grayed out. The driver is a Microsoft PS2 compatible mouse.

The installed O/S is the pre-installed one : Windows 8 basic/home edition.

1) Is the mouse driver noted above correct for the G46?
2) How can I disble the touchpad?
3) How can I get the fn+f9 button to work as Asus intended?

Cheers, s.

you need atk package; and touchpad driver for the fn keys to make it work (and it looks like your touchpad driver is missing).

The ATK packages are installed. These came installed with the O/S.
Which touch-pad mouse has the G46vw got in it?

Ran the setup programme for the ElanTech driver. It stated the hardware was missing/not installed.
( I do not recall the exact wording ).

that's weird; is it possible that your custom unit is using a different touch pad? you can try synaptics driver from other versions of g-series to see if it's supported.

UPDATE: I tried the Synaptics driver which failed as I expected.

Then I tried the Elantech again and it works. fn+f9 works now as well.

Why does it work now, and not afore?
The instructions on the Asus web site ask to remove the previous driver afore updating the new driver. Therefore I uninstalled the touchpad PS2 compatible driver first, and then attempted to install the Elantech, which failed on "h/w does not exist".
A reboot added the PS2 compatible module back, and then the installation of the Elantech module worked.

So, all is well.

On a side note, I have to say that I am extremely happy with ,my G46vw. The author of the review on Notebookcheck thought the screen too dark and 1378 not high enough a resolution: This was the only hesitation I had. I am very glad that I bought this notebook: The screen is vibrant, not too dark or dull, and looks far better than the screen on my Sony Viao, which has a higher cd/m2 measurement than the G46vw. But then again I prefer studio monitors to coloured sound, so the same ought to be true when watching television or playing game.
