It's about 4 months old. I am wondering if this is something I can repair/replace, or if I have RMA it.

Could be a bad bearing in the fan. How comfortable are you disassembling/assembling laptops? Ever done it before?

yes that should be no problem assuming I can figure out what part to order. the fan in question appears to be located at the far right rear of the unit, although I have not yet opened it to investigate.

You may also find that something is contacting the fan, creating the noise. See http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/616055-how-disassemble-g74sx-reduce-speak...

You can probably get the part number from contacting ASUS. What you have to decide is - do I want to void the ASUS warranty by attempting this repair?

I found a video for disassembly to add ram and 2nd hard drive, and I have the unit disassembled this far, but it looks like further disassembly will be a bit more complicated. Is there a good video on full disassembly? Ideally I want not to break something AND void warranty AND not fix fan.

yeah, that's OK but the angle is terrible, mostly you see the side of the case and his arm. FWIW this is what my fan sounds like

any ideas whether this the bearings or something rubbing? The latter seems unlikely because I haven't moved the machine in weeks.
