Do Strix G16 laptops support HDR in games or not?

I cannot get a straight answer to this question! I'm looking at buying a new gaming laptop and it's coming down to the Strix G16 4070 or the Zephyrus G16 4070 OLED. The Zephyrus costs quite a bit more but I love the HDR gaming capabilities of it - a friend showed me and it was very impressive!

The Strix G16 I saw at BestBuy specifically shows that it supports HDR video but not basic HDR (which is used in games).

This is the Zephyrus, but when I look at the same Windows settings on the Strix, it says HDR video streaming is supported but "Use HDR" is NOT supported. Which means gaming in HDR is not supported.

Asus themselves tell me it is supported but I don't believe them. Reddit talks a lot about the fact that it is not supported so I'm asking the same question here. Anybody have a Strix (not a Scar version) that shows both of these settings are supported?

Thanks.

I guess it depends on which version since there's a bunch of rog strix g16 4070 laptops. If it's the 2024 version with a ROG Nebula Display it should have it.

If use HDR is not supported, then it isn't supported.

It's your choice really, but if your main thing is gaming I'd say go with the Strix, since it usually has higher tdp and as such better performance. Also, if the price difference is significant enough you might even be able to buy a 4080 version and that should be much better. Either way, you can always connect it to an external hdr display and get hdr that way if you really want to.

I looked at the display model in Best Buy with the ROG Nebula display and it DID not support HDR fully (just for video streaming). That's the confusion. I had an MSI Raider with basically the same display...no full support for HDR and I will not buy another one without it. I just can't get a straight answer so I was hoping someone has a Strix with the 2560x1600 240 Hz display that Windows reports supporting BOTH HDR formats. I've never seen one though Asus swears it is supported. Not from what I've seen.

Unfortunately, there isn't only one HDR standard if anybody wants to check online about it more which makes things confusing.

Some ASUS notebooks can support Dolby Vision HDR, but as some of you may have found, Windows will not report 'Use HDR' as supported for those displays and notebooks which only support Dolby Vision HDR.

If you refer to the table in our FAQ below, hopefully it makes it more clear since the Nebula HDR display is the one that can support another HDR standard and is different from the normal Nebula display which only supports Dolby Vision HDR.

It isn't always easy to confirm which notebooks include the Nebula HDR display though, so confirm with the local ASUS support or others if necessary, but if the screen shows it supports 1,100 nits, that may be one way to help identify them although probably a good idea to double-check and make sure that wasn't a typo.

==============

As far as the Strix notebooks go, hopefully someone can let us know if I'm wrong about this, but if you check our ROG article below, it mentions only the Strix SCAR models will include the Nebula HDR displays, so don't expect we will hear from any 'normal' Strix customers who see 'Use HDR' supported in Windows for their notebook display.  If anybody is planning to use an external monitor, that may be another option though.

In short, the answer is no. If it isn't supported in Windows, the games won't support it either. Unfortunately, the online support staff lied to me and promised me that HDR was supported but it is not. I will have to return the Strix and get the Zephyrus. I wish support staff were properly trained.

The G16 with just a 4060 here. As I'm sure that you have figured out by now the Display is the most important factor in this question. As I can see Asus makes the Same exact models with many different variants... I empathize with your struggle. However I'd like to shed a little light on this if it helps. I'm on a shoe string budget. I managed to find a 2560x1440 display that supports free sync on the cheap. This combined with a Display port to usb-c cord does enable HDR mode on the 4060, it will on the 4070 as well. SO in retro spec... No my laptop does not support HDR on it's home screen but yes the GPU does support through a monitor with enough GRIT(I.E. the ability to produce HDR) (FreeSync is G-Sync and whatever AMD calls there syncing program)

I hope this cleared some of the wrenches, Don't get discouraged but take notes and don't make a speedy decision.

GOOD LUCK< As always> HAVE FUN!
