Brightness too high when using Ultimate/GPU Only in bios + other issues Scar G733PY

Gidrah
Level 7

This is for the ROG Strix Scar G733PY (Non X3D) on Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Bios 334

My main issues is the screen brightness/white level is overly bright when using Ultimate mode or the GPU Only mode in bios.

When using the iGPU or Dynamic in bios/Standard mode and selecting GPU Only in the Nvidia control panel the screen brightness behaves normally, I can view it comfortably on 70-80% brightness.

However when I select Ultimate mode/GPU Only in bios the white level of the screen brightness increases to the point that it hurts my eyes. Lowering the brightness does not affect white brightness and I need to turn it down as low as 40% to view comfortably but then blacks are too dark. I believe this may be due to HDR being forced somehow when using Ultimate/Bios GPU Only because I know whites are elevated in HDR. The odd thing is this laptop doesn't support HDR, just HDR streaming which is a fake HDR mode anyways. It baffles me why this is a thing.

Other issues:

  1. The brightness is also locked when using DGPU.
  2. The color gamut option is missing in armoury crate so I cant clamp down to the srgb color space without 3rd party programs which is annoying.
  3. Randomly sometimes I get a black screen after closing and reopening the laptop lid. Double rpessing FN+F10 to cycle screens fixes this but still odd.

Things I have tried to fix all these issues:

  • Clean reinstall of Windows 11 Pro 24H2
  • Clean reinstall of Windows 11 pro 23H2
  • disabling auto brightness (Missing from settings)
  • Trying difference Nvidia drivers
  • Making sure AMD and any other drivers are up to date
  • Installing all windows and MyAsus updates.
  • Clean install of both Armoury Crate and G Helper individually. (Gamut switch between DCI-P3 and sRGB missing on both, Game Visual works though.)
  • Contacting Asus support (Told me to do an EC Reset, didn't work)
  • Rolled back to Bios 331 (Didn't work so reverted to 334)

The only other person I found that has one of my issues was here: https://rog-forum.asus.com/t5/rog-strix-series/asus-rog-strix-scar-16-g634jz-rtx-4080-is-stuttering-... They also reported the elevated brightness when using Ultimate/GPU Only mode and never got a fix.

After all this I am convinced the abnormal brightness is either a Bios bug or Windows 11 issue since it is present on a clean install. For the gamut issue others have reported their color gamut switch is missing as well.

At this point all I can do is the workaround of using Advanced Optimus and GPU Only in the Nvidia control panel but it seems buggy, I also have to use novideo_srgb to clamp to the srgb color space which I have to re-enable every time due to windows starting with the iGPU.

Ideally I just want to use Ultimate mode in the srgb color space and i'm exhausted jumping through hoops to troubleshoot a $3000.

Any help or other users can share if they have the same issues?
