ASUS ROG Strix G16FR (AMD 9955HX3D) - RAM Upgrade Issue (96GB/128GB Not Recognized)

Dear ASUS Support Team and Community,

I recently purchased an ASUS ROG Strix G16FR notebook, equipped with the AMD 9955HX3D processor. According to the official product specifications and various online resources, this model's CPU (AMD 9955HX3D) is stated to support up to 192GB of RAM. Based on this information and the general understanding that motherboard chipsets typically support the maximum RAM capacity of the CPU, I proceeded to upgrade my my system.

I initially attempted to install 96GB (2x48GB) of DDR5 RAM, but the system did not recognize the full capacity. It either booted with a lower capacity or failed to boot entirely, indicating a compatibility or recognition issue. Following this, I also tried installing 128GB (2x64GB) of DDR5 RAM, and experienced the same recognition problems. I have ensured that the RAM modules are correctly seated and have tried re-seating them multiple times. The specific RAM modules I used are Crucial cl46 5600mhz ram modules.

This issue is concerning as the CPU's stated maximum RAM support heavily influenced my purchase decision and upgrade path. It appears there might be a discrepancy between the CPU's advertised capability and the notebook's actual support, possibly due to:

  • BIOS/UEFI limitations: The current BIOS version might not fully support high-capacity RAM modules (e.g., 48GB or 64GB per stick) or the total 96GB/128GB.

  • Motherboard/Chipset limitations: Despite the CPU's capabilities, the specific motherboard implementation in the G16FR might have a lower practical limit.

  • A software/firmware bug: An unaddressed issue preventing full RAM recognition.

I would greatly appreciate it if the ASUS team could investigate this matter. Could you please provide clarification on the maximum supported RAM capacity for the ASUS ROG Strix G16FR with the AMD 9955HX3D processor?

Furthermore, I kindly request ASUS to release a BIOS/firmware update that enables full support for 96GB (2x48GB), 128GB (2x64GB) RAM configurations, aligning with the AMD 9955HX3D's capabilities. This would be crucial for users who rely on high RAM capacities for demanding tasks such as video editing, 3D rendering, or large-scale development environments.

Thank you for your time and assistance. I look forward to your prompt response and a resolution to this issue.

Sincerely,

Hello,

While you wait for some answers I have some questions for in relation to your information and what happened with 2x48GB.

1) What is your source for the AMD CPU supporting 192GB?

https://www.amd.com/en/products/processors/laptop/ryzen/9000-series/amd-ryzen-9-9955hx3d.html

As according to AMD its 96GB max.

2) What happened with the 2x48GB, you mention it booted with lower capacity or failed to boot?

Does this mean 48GB showed up or it failed to boot? And if so what is the possibility that perhaps you had a faulty memory module so it sometimes worked and sometimes didn't?

Testing wise did you try 1 48GB module at a time and test each Dimm slot individually to verify that both modules work on their own and both dimm slots work on their own?

Hello Thanks for your reply,

Some notebook manufacturer pages mention references to 128gb support or working configurations.  ( Msi example )

2) Unfortunately, when I tried to reset the bios to factory settings, I tried both modules by inserting them into different slots on the notebook, but it goes to standby and cannot complete the boot before getting past the Asus Rog text on the screen and reaching the bios screen. So I don't think it's the Crucial modules

That's odd, usually it's always the CPU manufacturer's spec that is accurate, even MSI show it as 96GB so perhaps there is something wrong with the online shop? (get in touch and ask for details and see what they say about the 128GB advertised).

As to your problem, memory can take a while to work as their is a "training" process. Usually a black screen for a minute or 2 until it boots up but if you have already waited and done everything then it's more likely a compatibility issue with the 2x48GB. (If you haven't done so already contact support directly too)

hello,

I was surprised to see that all modules worked after the test period after the new ram was installed,

but it is quite difficult to use in practical life.

for 128gb ram it takes about 18 minutes and for 96gb ram it takes about 10 12 minutes to complete the test and post screen and even if this time is after the first installation, the process starts all over again at the slightest bios setting change.

In short, yes, the system works with 128Hb and 96gb ram (I am currently using it with 128gb ram) but these times and process are quite annoying.

That's a lot of waiting, and it is also limited on the frequency?

Yes, i tried several options, and new firmware didn't change anything
