Asus rog gl552vw-dh71 vs asus rog gl752vw-dh71

Hey everyone!
So, I recently acquired enough money to buy a new gaming laptop for ~1000$ and I’ve managed to narrow it down to both of these laptops.

ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01578ZKPO?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ord_cart_shr&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER...

ASUS ROG GL752VW-DH71: http://www.amazon.com/GL752VW-DH71-17-Inch-Discrete-GeForce-Metallic/dp/B01578ZK9A/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&i...

Obviously, there’s a lot of similarities between the laptop; same Intel Core processor, price, HDD, resolution, Graphic Card, RAM, and etc. The question is with the differences…

The major difference I noted between the two that is making difficult to decide is the displays and the difficulties between installing an SSD on either laptop.

• 15.6 inch Matte IPS FHD display
• 17.3 inch Matte FHD display

The GL552 has the 15.6 display and the GL752 has the 17.3 display. Is there honestly a noticeable difference between color resolutions on each display? I feel like it would better to go bigger on this one and go with the 17.3 inch, but I don’t if it’s worth downplaying the color resolution. Plus, in your guys opinion, which screen would you go with? I’m not entirely sure how much traveling around I’ll be doing, so that doesn’t really help…

The second thing was the SSD port. I’ve read so many complaints with installing a SSD on the GL752 that it seems it’s not worth the trouble of ordering the laptop, finding out the SSD I’m ordering doesn’t work and then having to return it. As such, I wanted to see whether it’s possible to install a Samsung 850 EVO 250GB 2.5-Inch SATA SSD on the GL752. If anybody has any info on this, it would be much appreciated!

Slightly off topic - Buy it from ExcaliberPC, and you get some freebies that sellers on Amazon don't give. 🙂
If I remember correctly, the SSD you mentioned is compatible with this Laptop

Okay, step by step;

Display;
I have NOT seen the screen of the GL552, but I write now from a GL752 and I can tell you that the whites are blue-ish, and for example if I spend time at the laptop and then set a glance on the iphone, my eyes feel strange because of the different lightning. Anyway, I was able to completely solve this issue with an app called "f.lux", which gives a warmer look to the screen of the laptop, and it remains really comfortable to spend hours and hours. Doesn't consume almost anything of cpu/ram, gets started as soon as windows launchs, and doesn't bother with stupid notifications. Definitely happy with this.

Screen size;
Well this is a very personal thing. My thoughts; if you are going to use the laptop as a work station and only move it occasionally, go for the 752. If you are looking for a more portable thing, go for the 552. The 752 is way bigger, monster laptop. But I love the big screen (I come from a 15,6" VAIO).

For the display and screen size; try to go to a local store where you can compare it physically.

SSD;
The SSD you mention is a normal 2,5 inch SATA, so you'll be able to install it in ANY laptop, it's the typical size of also the old hard drive disks. The SSD you should be looking for is the Samsung EVO 850 M.2 SATA III 256GB, which is the one everyone (including myself) is installing. There has been ASUS communication problems with us because not even themselves knew which kind of protocol accepted the SSD, but, if I am not wrong, it supports PCI/SATA without problems (I even heard a guy that installed the 950 on a GL752).
Summing up, you won't have any problems installing the ssd. There's a couple of topics here talking about that, and we can solve the doubts you could have.

@AMnandodean Awesome, thank you very much for the insight! 😄

Curious though, is there a major difference between those two SSD's? Seems like the only difference is the 6GB of space.
And when installing it, do I have to do anything fancy? Like taking out the HDD installed while installing the SSD, booting on the SSD, and then adding in the HDD on clean boot-up... read on one of the threads that someone had to do this when installing their SSD and I'm curious if I have to do that with this one.

It is definitely a huge difference; one is a 2,5 inch disk, and the other one a M.2 type. Way quicker the M.2. Also there's the obvious fact that if you take the 2,5 inch disk, you'll have to remove the HDD that came with the laptop, and won't be able to have both at the same time (unless you buy a box that fits the CD bay and substitute it). Check them out;

What comes to the installation proccess, I didn't have to extract the HDD included, did a FULL clone with the software Macrium Reflect, and after that, while booting I pressed ESC key and the laptop let me select the windows boot manager located at the SSD. Once in windows, I formatted the HDD.

Anyway, there's been issues entering to windows with the other HDD inserted, so, to make it safe and smooth, better take it out. It's 5 minutes

Alright, sounds perfect, thanks a lot, nandodean! 😄
