Asus GL553VE - CPU/GPU Temperatures while gaming/Throttling

Hi Guys,

I purchased Asus GL553VE laptop about a month back..I just wanted to know your temperatures while gaming..While playing games such as Mafia 3, Mass Effect Andromeda, my CPU and GPU temperature both reaches around 82-85 degrees Celsius after 10 minutes of playing. My ambient temperature are close to 35 degrees celsius.

As its a new laptop, therefore i rule out the possibility of thermal paste, dust accumulation, heatsink problems, etc. Also, the airflow out of the heatsink also seems fine to me. I have tried lowering down my CPU processor state/frequency in power state to disable turbo boost, even then the CPU temperature reach around 82 degrees or so.

Could you guys help me in knowing what temperatures do you get while playing similar games and if its normal?

Thanks

Hi. I will try to say my story so far with my GL 553 VE. I bought mine august 2017. As i saw it i liked it very much. It was the last one on the store, and it was the demo laptop so i was reluctant at first but i gave it a go. A couple of months i started to monitor the temps. After 5 min on "Hitman 2016" with 99% gpu usage and about 50% cpu usage i was hitting 84 degrees on gpu and 85 on cpu even on 100% fan speed. On Battlefield 1 with 60-70 Gpu usage and 90-100 on cpu usage i was getting the same temps as above, and being that Battlefield 1 is a cpu intensive game i was having problems as the cpu would throttle as far as 1800 mhz. So today i have had it and i wanted to repaste the cpu and gpu. After i cleaned the heatseak (on the back of the vents there was some dust accumulated) i repasted with Arctic MX-4. I did some tests:
Hitman on the same usage, after 15 min i had 71 on the gpu and 78 on cpu..and without any throttle. On BF1 I had the same temps. I also Undervelted the cpu -0.100mhz and i turned fans at 100%. As i write this post the idle temp are 34 gpu , 34 cpu on auto fan speed. On the following week i will do some more testing but at first impression i think it is amazing. Also i forgot i am on the latest drivers of asus and on 306 bios., windows 10 pro updated to this today. Sorry for long post.

Check out the MSI link playing sniper elite 4 at ultra setting with CPU and GPU temperatures hovering around 59-64 degrees mark..https://youtu.be/vnhERXkZYBU

Playing sniper elite 4 on my GL553VE leads to CPU and GPU reaching around 83-84 easily at high/medium settings just after 5-10 mins into the game..are you guys getting same temps?

Hi Sid,*

The cpu in this laptop is an i5 and that could be a contributing factor. However I do feel a bit jealous that they can achieve this temps and we cant. So far the only solution for me to lower temps while gaming is to disable turbo boost. Getting 79C for CPU and 74C for GPU.*

Hi jplucero

ya i am also lowering the temperatures by disabling the turbo boost..i guess thats the only available option as of now..

Even though the MSI laptop has i5 processor but even the GPU stays near about 65 degrees in the video whereas my GPU clearly goes around 77-79 degrees even after disabling turbo boost

I guess MSI scores here with a better cooling technology

The MSI got dual fan sid. We only has single fan to handle both gpu and cpu

I replace the thermal paste on my GL553VD. The stock thermal paste was too much. And it seems runny. I use DeepCool Z9. I did not install any temperature monitoring software. But i did feel the air temp that came out from the exhaust port was significantly reduced. I will find better thermal paste and try to reapply and test again.

Try Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut, it's seriously the best choice and lasts the longest.

Will try that. Thanks.

Sid, and what with FPS? You got me same as MSI?

I get about 40-45 fps in medium high setting
