Just thought I'd update this post. I had to ship my laptop in for RMA and they replaced the entire motherboard. Works great now. Was a $1300+ part so definitely get this done under warranty if you have the same problem.

My GL502VS started misbehaving, the external monitor (older one connected via VGA to DP adapter) was showing distortion, tried lots of different monitors and adapters and concluded it was the laptop's fault. Did not try booting to Ubuntu, should have.
I sent it in for service (via Squaretrade) and all they did was put on a fresh Windows installation and sent it back, and it was fixed. I had imaged my OS drive before sending it in so I put it back on and the problem came back, so I did a DDU uninstallation of all display drivers I could find, then installed them fresh, and the problem was gone.
So, I would say, if you are having external display issues, first try doing that before sending in for service as you will be without the laptop for many days (mine took 10 days, but again, not ASUS, but I think it would have taken just as long).
