ASUS G74SX USB 3.0 Issues

Retired
Not applicable
I've been having problems with my Rocketfish USB 3.0 2.5' enclosure. When plugged into the USB 3 port of the G74SX after very little usage (especially during a HDTune test) it disconnects and reconnects rendering any transfer impossible (beyond a few hundred megabytes). Anyone experience this issue? It works fine in a USB 2.0 port and the USB 3 port works fine with a 3.0 flash drive. I tested the drive on my desktop which also has USB 3.0 and it worked just fine. I'm guessing the port isn't supplying sufficient power for the drive which is strange. I also tried plugging the 2nd USB connector into the USB 2.0 port to give it some extra juice but it changed nothing. The drive I am using is one of the 750GB 7200RPM drives from the G74 (I replaced one of the internals with an M4 SSD). Thanks so much for your help.

Update.

No driver updates or tricks with asuspatch etc. helped.
There was also update to WD 2TB Usb3.0 drive firmware.

In fact I discovered that D-link Usb3.0 hub (expensive, with 4A power supply) fixed the problem.

WD "promises" to draw upto 1000mA from port while USB3.0 is supposed to provide only 900mA.
Actually, I would consider the state of these affairs rather snafu, really.

Also, WD is the only company with 2TB USB drive (2.5inch), but make no mistake, this solution is not really portable since you need to use external hub to power this drive (in USB3.0 mode)

HI,
Faced same issues with disconnects/reconnects using WD 2TB Passport USB3.0 and ASUS G74SX.
Performed all steps BrodyBoy have mentioned, trying to install recommended drivers or newer drivers (V3.5.74.0 or even V3.5.93.0) with no luck.
It worked (no more hdd disconnects) then i performed all the steps BrodyBoy recommended, but used V3.0.110.12 drivers.
Maybe its just coinsequense, but worth to try.

Hey guys for a WD 1Tb blue in a ICY box usb 3.0 enclosure:
Maybe offtopic but for me for a G46W worked downgrade the usb3.0 soft from the latest from windows 7/intel to the one for G55W from asus site, as the G46 support is only for win8 not for win7.
Now works constant at 50-60gb +, before was worse than usb 2. See attched tests hdtune
All the best

What's the most stable USB 3.0 driver for Fresco Controllers also for G53JW series?

I noticed something strange when I was using my laptop last night, after several hours (about 6) not once did my flash drive disconnect a single time. Today while I was on it again, I had the same flash drive go into another series of “epileptic” disconnect/reconnects. The ONLY difference was my wireless card was connected/in use today and it was not last night. I believe that this issue may not totally be a matter of usb 3 drivers or overall compatibility issues with the flash drive but matter of how the laptop directs power to each device. In other words, I noticed that the more I use the wireless card, the more my flash drive disconnect/reconnects and the only way to resolve it (as far as I can tell) is a powered usb 3 hub.

ok I think i fixed my problem

asus g74sx usb 3.0 dismounting and remounting of my 2tb wd passport

i found this in the event viewer
pre-dismount
1011 The Portable Device Enumerator Service service entered the stopped state.
1019 The Application Experience service entered the stopped state.

at time of dismount
1020 An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR2 during a paging operation.
1020 The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur.

after remount
1020 The Portable Device Enumerator Service service entered the running state.
1020 The Application Experience service entered the running state.

Soooooo
I disabled the 2 services
so far so good.
now I wonder what problems i will encounter due to these being disabled. Oh well my 3.0 works.

oh and btw i tried EVERYTHING mentioned here and elsewhere including updating FRESCO driver to the new 3.5.100

Well it happened again ................ >o

i did this also, and it still cuts out. it reloads very quickly, but still cuts out. i just don't understand it. there has to be an answer somewhere as to why this thing does this, and a way to stop it.

update: after reloading the newest drivers (3.5.97.0), and turning off those services, it is working well, with no
disconnects. finally fixed.
