ASUS G74SX USB 3.0 Issues

Retired
Not applicable
I've been having problems with my Rocketfish USB 3.0 2.5' enclosure. When plugged into the USB 3 port of the G74SX after very little usage (especially during a HDTune test) it disconnects and reconnects rendering any transfer impossible (beyond a few hundred megabytes). Anyone experience this issue? It works fine in a USB 2.0 port and the USB 3 port works fine with a 3.0 flash drive. I tested the drive on my desktop which also has USB 3.0 and it worked just fine. I'm guessing the port isn't supplying sufficient power for the drive which is strange. I also tried plugging the 2nd USB connector into the USB 2.0 port to give it some extra juice but it changed nothing. The drive I am using is one of the 750GB 7200RPM drives from the G74 (I replaced one of the internals with an M4 SSD). Thanks so much for your help.

Actually, I just update the driver using the link from @BrodyBoy (above) and worked like a charm.
I didn't do the steps 1-6. Just the update and the Asus-patch that is inside the zip.

🙂

Thanks @BrodyBoy

You're welcome! Glad it's fixed! 🙂

Having the same issue here. Brand new G74sx. I tried the steps listed above with no luck. Then I updated the driver with Asus LiveUpdate, and still no luck.

I have a 1TB WD Passport connected with a USB 3.0 cable. It disconnects after a minute or two when transferring files. It works fine when plugged into the USB 2.0 ports on the G74sx, as well as when it is plugged into USB 3.0 ports on a different computer.

The useless person I spoke to at Asus tech support acted like this was a unique situation and told me my only course of action was to bring it back to Best Buy and let them fix it.

ASUS laptops have a utility pre-installed called "ASUS Ai Charger: http://event.asus.com/mb/2010/ai_charger/
I actually use this utility to charge my smartphone whether the laptop is powered on or off - works great! However, I wonder if it somehow interferes with the external USB drives. It may be worthwhile disabling or uninstalling this utility to test this idea. I do not have an external USB drive with this issue to test it myself.

Is your HP drive powered externally or does it draw it's power from the USB port?

The users reporting they resolved the issue not only updated the driver, but also installed the ASUS patch in the driver installation file set. Did you?

Yep. Tried it with the patch and without. I just uninstalled the Fresco USB 3.0 drivers and then used Asus LiveUpdate to install the newest ones, but they also did not fix the issue. I'm not sure if this latest driver includes a patch, because installation is all automatic, but the same command prompt box comes up when it installs. (same as when you manually apply the patch for the old drivers) Not sure if that's the patch installing or not?

Have you tried a different USB3.0 cable?

Unfortunately I only have one and the cable and drive work fine when plugged into the USB 3.0 ports on my desktop PC.

Unfortunately, USB3.0 still exhibits that "new tech" flakiness. What may work with one computer or drive may not work with a different one.

I'd try enabling USB Charging in the BIOS (or install Ai Charger Plus and enable charging) to boost the electrical output of the USB 3.0 port after following Brody's 6 steps (http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?3125-ASUS-G74SX-USB-3.0-Issues&p=63349&viewfull=1#post63349) and confirming the latest version driver and ASUS patch are installed.
