ASUS G74SX USB 3.0 Issues

Retired
Not applicable
I've been having problems with my Rocketfish USB 3.0 2.5' enclosure. When plugged into the USB 3 port of the G74SX after very little usage (especially during a HDTune test) it disconnects and reconnects rendering any transfer impossible (beyond a few hundred megabytes). Anyone experience this issue? It works fine in a USB 2.0 port and the USB 3 port works fine with a 3.0 flash drive. I tested the drive on my desktop which also has USB 3.0 and it worked just fine. I'm guessing the port isn't supplying sufficient power for the drive which is strange. I also tried plugging the 2nd USB connector into the USB 2.0 port to give it some extra juice but it changed nothing. The drive I am using is one of the 750GB 7200RPM drives from the G74 (I replaced one of the internals with an M4 SSD). Thanks so much for your help.

So I contacted Asus support and they told me to download the USB 3.0 driver from their site and re-install it. That didn't work and neither did a repair so I contacted them again and they said it could be an issue with my Clickfree drive. I mentioned that other Asus owners were having the same problem with different external drives but it was news to them.

Clickfree support couldn't help either except to say trying another 3.0 peripheral to see if the port was working at all. A local computer shop had a cheapo 3.0 drive from a manufacturer I'd never heard of but yet when I plugged it in the computer recognized it. Don't know if it's an issue with Asus and the HD manufacturers not standardizing their interfaces but something's amiss.

The store I bought the drive from is willing to exchange it for another brand. A Seagate Go-Flex 3.0 2TB goes for around the same price so I'll give it a whirl. I'll get back to Asus and point them to this thread so they'll see I'm not alone in this issue. Give them a shout as well if you're experiencing the same problem and perhaps they'll take it more seriously.

@planetkor:

Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling the way I described below? I suggest it because I think this lets Windows use its own power settings for the USB devices, rather than a third-party's install configuration. It's worth a try.

Also, do you have other USB devices plugged in while using your WD Elements SE?

@BrodyBoy:

No, not yet. I use this wonderful laptop for more than just gaming; I work with it, too.
I got it two months ago and it came freshly installed with the latest and the greatest.
I am, in general, a bit reluctant to make changes to it unless I am really forced to.
You know what they say; if it ain't broken don't fix it.
So I don't consider it broken just not working properly.

Yes, I have two other usb2 components plugged in:
- wireless mouse
- wireless headphones
I also tried it with everything else unplugged and got the same old boring disconnect/connect results.

Anyways, I think I may try doing it your way on the weekend.

Question: should I keep the WD Elements SE 1TB HDD plugged in at the time of re-installation or should I just let Windows7 take it's own course?

It would be great to know if anyone before me had done this with success or I am the guinea pig here...
🙂
Sorry about the rambling....

I seriously doubt that. Drivers, especially on Asus machines, are often outdated before a laptop even ships.

I think you misunderstood my post. I wasn't suggesting (nor would I) anything risky or weird or "experimental." You're not a guinea pig. This is just a way to let Windows install the USB devices properly. It's not a big deal, and yes, I've done it myself. Just the other day, in fact, when a WD Passport wasn't being recognized properly.

It doesn't matter whether the drive is plugged in or not. And it isn't really time-consuming or complicated. You could do it right now, in about 10 minutes, and report back. 🙂

PS: IS that particular WD drive powered externally? Or does it just use USB power?

I have exactly the same problem with a HP 1TB USB3.0.
It connects, but disconnects on copying or reading big files.

Thanks...

I can't believe that Asus haven't fixed this issue yet, my Asus G74SX is almost 3 years old and I still can't use my USB 3.0 port without it cutting out disconnecting then having to start all over again! I have tried all the ideas suggested in this thread to get my WD Elements 2.0TB drive to work but none have helped, ( I removed all the USB hubs, controllers in Windows and rebooted, uninstalled the USB 3.0 driver reinstalled it with 5 different versions including the latest version released this year etc!) I have been trying for days to get this working properly but I am assigned to the fact that my USB 3.0 port is completely useless and I am going to have to use my old slow USB 2.0 ports which don't have any issues at all! What is the story Asus? One of the reasons I bought this laptop is because it did have a USB 3.0 port when they were still new technology!

Btw Asus support were totally useless, I tried to explain to them that this is a known issue and they played dumb and said they didn't know anything about it, and that I should get my Laptop serviced? Ummmm WHAT?!!! Do they visit their own forums at all?

Anyone else have any ideas? Thanks!

OK, some feedback . . . as suggested on another site I tried installing the Fresco Logic drivers found here: http://www.station-drivers.com/page/fresco_logic.htm. They worked, but the port was now running as a USB 2.0 port, not USB 3.0. I de-installed this driver and reinstalled the original driver from ASUS. ( You need to completely uninstall them, otherwise Windows will reload them instead of the ASUS supplied drivers)

I have tried removing the Fresco USB controller in device manager and let it get reinstalled, but there no change in behavior.

FWIW, I did notice my WD drive does not seem capable of transferring data as fast as USB 2.0 would allow, let alone USB 3.0. For the few seconds it does work at USB 3.0 the transfer speed is the same as USB 2.0.

Well it looks like my new Seagate Go-Flex 3.0 2TB external drive is working as directed. Initially I had to do a backup by copy/paste as the Memeo dashboard program that comes with the drive had problems interfacing with the laptop. After re-installing Memeo the backup went smoothly and I just got a message the nearly 300G backup is up to date. Hopefully the auto update works okay too.
