Adding RAM to G75

Hello I'm new to these forums so sorry if there is already a thread on this. I have a G75VW-BBK5 (bought from Bestbuy) It currently has 8 gigs of RAM and I am planning on adding more to get 16 gigs of RAM, I Don't know too much about the speeds and brands of RAM and was wondering what would you recommend me buying, sorry if this question sounds dumb but I just don't know much on what exactly I'm supposed to be looking for. Thanks in advance.

Thanks rewben, much obliged. Btw, I fixed the links.

nice! and don't mention it 🙂

With rewben's helpful answers to my questions, I ordered the chip below that matched the stock memory's timings:

G.SKILL 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model F3-1600C11D-16G...

Incredibly, I ordered it Friday afternoon with free shipping (4-5 business days) to Virginia and it arrived Saturday! Dropped it in and it worked perfectly! All RAM running with timings 11-11-11 and the clock operating near 800 MHz (per HWiNFO64).

Configuration: 8G G.Skill + 4G Hynix (stock) + 8G G.Skill + 4G Hynix (stock) = 24G.

I should mention my needs are for memory intensive trading applications and, as others have mentioned, this much RAM might be overkill for gaming.

Thanks again rewben!

hey don't mention it, @whitmark 🙂 thanks a lot for your confirmation on this hynix and g.skill combo, as this will help many others.

to verify that, you can check out the SPD (for each memory slot) in cpu-z, i think.

if possible, you should run memtest overnight to be sure the ram mix is fine.

memtest ran about 4 passses okay overnight. The voltage readings are from the speed page of cpu-z. I am just curious if the motherboard can actually set two voltages or cpu-z is just reading the default settings from the individual ram slots.

that i cannot give you a good answer sorry; i have all ram swapped, and they're at the same voltage.

hi @babyrinrin, the best option is full swap in your case (i.e. replace the stock ram with CV as well), if you really cannot get the matching ones. (i would suggest you look it up and get the matching ones from one of the online shops).

due to the differences in timings between CV and stock ram (i assume you have the same hynix as stock), the combination will bring the ram clock down to 1333MHz (dual channel), instead of maintaining the stock 1600MHz.

the bright side is this: if the combo passed memory tests, your system can run without issues. many friends here do suggest that as long as the new ram is of 1600MHz, the combo should be fine.

i also read that there is a tool from intel that can 'fix' the timing issue so that the combo can run at 1600MHz; but i am no expert in that.

Sorry about taking so long to reply but my memory problem (computer wouldn't recognize it) was solved by a BIOS update as suggested by ASUS support. Thank for the help figuring out the problem.

Hi guys,

Just got my G75VW, and from the earlier posts, it looks like I have modules that are at 11-11-11-28, and 1600 MHz dual-channel, if I'm reading it right. This would mean that any similar dual-channel kit will work, right? (will update with some options after I check what models are available online)

I'm looking to add on another 16Gb to run my virtualization environments.

24812

So I had a look, and from Corsair at least it seems this latency is only used on their bargain 'Value Select' line. Makes me want to do a full upgrade to 32Gb on all 4 slots, but I still am on warranty >.<

Anyone here got a better option to suggest at this latency?
