2024 ROG: 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-13980HX (2.20 GHz) with 64gb RAM: Running Slowly

Hi All,

Firstly.. my apologies for whats about to come.. I don't understand what all the terms mean, so I have no idea if what I'm about to ask is going to be coherent ..

I bought this laptop a little over a year ago, and opted for the RAM upgrade of 64gb - as I'm a music producer, and need the extra power.

Recently I've noticed quite a big drop off in performance, and I wondered if you guys can tell me from the attached images if something is wrong.. I downloaded and ran the CPUZ programme.. or at least I think its displaying ACTUAL performance data... but could be wrong.

If theres anyone here who can assist, I would be most grateful... if you need additional information to assist, please let me know and I'll do my best to get for you!

Try to reaet the bios

Turn off the laptop and plug it in the charger

Hold power On button for 40-60 secconds

Restart and test

okay willl try.. at this rate im gonna need to get a new notebook.. cos it cant handle half the number of musical tracks that it used to.. weird///.

ah.. na didnt do anything .. thanks anyway

Hello,

Are you able to explain the slowness, like what was it able to perform faster before compared to now. How does the program work, when you mention tracks is this a process that means exporting and compiling the music to a digital format with conversion of some sort that relies heavily on the CPU?

And is anything else different, like the fans spinning faster than usual too or anything else slower?

Whilst not always the cause temperatures the CPU can impact performance should it be running too hot to the point it can cripple any laptop / desktop PC. What are the temperatures like when the laptop is doing nothing and how are they when it's being used in your music creation tasks?

Here is something you can also use to check, hardware monitor.

https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

With hardware monitor open look at the temperatures and clock frequencies like in this video.

https://youtu.be/Y2m6GLV3mFc?si=QrQIe077YFVdxfMN

Run CPUZ and go to the bench section, run the benchmark to see what happens and it will also give you 2 scores for multicore and single core CPU usage.

So firstly if your CPU is running too hot you will see that during the benchmark it will not maintain 5GHz but could be well below 2.2GHz.

Also the temperatures are important, if the laptop when idle is actually constantly at 90 degC + its going to be a problem too. Temperature peaks are ok during use but when idle it should stay relatively low.

And the scores, your CPU should be similar to the video. (I only show the P-Cores but look at everything, all P-Cores and E-cores)

1) What is the idle temperature (When laptop is not doing anything) for all the cores (screenshot if possible)

2) Can it maintain around 5GHz (All P-Cores) when the benchmark is running or is it dropping below 2.2GHz?

3) What is the multicore score / single core score?

See how that goes but if your scores are too low and temps too high you have your answer as to why it is slow, this would mean the laptop cooling needs some maintenance, in particular the thermal paste (liquid metal).

isany of the info you require in the op images?

i take it this is the issue then? whats the fix? new fan?

thanks man...really helpful!

Your original post images just should CPUZ which is mainly a program that pulls the device specifications and lists the hardware in use. So if someone had a laptop and didn't know what hardware was inside this is a good way to find out but as to performance it doesn't show until you hit the benchmark / stress test section 🙂

So yes based on your new screenshots and scores this is terrible and clearly the laptop is overheating along with the processor running in a very reduced state as a result. The Power usage for the CPU when in use is showing 20W and your core frequencies are well below normal, the performance score just confirms it's not running well.

The fix is you need to get the laptop taken apart and cleaned but also all the thermal material changed.

Example of the areas on the motherboard and heatsink.

would you suggest just getting a new one? I was actually looking for one anyway....

or can fix you think?

May i ask hyour advice on what new machine to consider? I was thinking about macbook pro.. or mac studio? But never had a mac before... i need something super high end, and am not afraid of a little extra cost..  i dont know what windows machines are comparible with m5 and m4 pro chips? would ideally like to stay windows, cos i know a little (very) about what happens under the hood
