PG32ucdm dissapointing HDR performance during anything but dark scenes

Is there any plans to update this monitor to have better HDR brigthness? because i'm going to return mine and grab an LG TV or a similar monitor due to this issue.

 

although this monitor has a peak brightness of 1000 nits which is impressive, it rarely gets to that point, a majority of the scenes fall between the 30-15% ABL range and as a result, HDR looks the same as SDR.

as you can see, the "real scene" is a good metric for the average result you'll get. anything above 600 is decent. 800 and above is good. 100% is pretty much unimportant IMO and 50% is rare but still happens.

 

this display aside from the QD-OLED's inherent panel flaw which is raised blacks and not something ASUS can change AFAIK is pretty great otherwise, it'd be a shame to return it. 

 

The QD-OLED just plumets down after the 1% and is basically always at around the same brightness, and I don't understand why this is necessary

That Rtings data is for firmware MCM103. If you’ve already updated to firmware MCM105 and it’s still not bright enough then it may not be the monitor for you.

QD-OLED’s are power hogs for example 200 nits full field white pulls 110 watts alone whereas MLA WOLED hits around 68 watts with the same display area and brightness. 

The 10-25% windows are still the same after the M105 update.

Seems like you're fishing with questions you probably already know the answer to regarding QD-OLED behaviour. Jetcat has probably hit the nail fairly close to the head. EU regulations don't lean kindly towards vendors who want to push the performance side of the envelope. That said, many users are pleased with HDR performance since MCM105 given the alternative modes.

Who is “you”? It’s the same reasons all QD-OLEDs have this behaviour, by design or otherwise. Energy ratings for display modes have been separated by the EU for a few years.

Since I'm already abusing your patience, would you be so kind as to point me to the specific EU regulation that establishes the power consumption limits of displays in HDR mode?

Wait, are you trying to say that EU regulations ignore power consumption in HDR mode? As that doesn't make sense. Think you might have taken the document out of context

All I've read is manufacturers need to state the measured HDR consumption in the EPREL tag. In contrast, a maximum SDR limit is specifically mentioned, hence that interpretation. If you happen to find anything that might prove my error I'd really appreciate it. 

So HDR power consumption can effectively be anything and doesn't need to meet regulations then? I'm asking as I'm curious as to what you're trying to imply that's all. Although I'd also imagine certain changes to the manufacturer's firmware has an impact on the panel performance, which may stop it from meeting certain energy rating criteria in SDR.
