PG27AQDM HDR 6500K looks bad with orange colours

Heya, I got this monitor about a month ago, overall very happy with it aside from how the colour Orange seems to be handled in HDR. Specifically with how Orange spreads around in a scene, it seems to appear like a deep Purple rather than as Orange, or it appears as way too much Orange.

In terms of troubleshooting, I've tried Firmware 105 has this issue, but 104 does not.

I've got some example images from The Witcher 3, and whilst I appreciate that showing a colour issue with photos from a phone isn't ideal, the issue is so prominent that it can be shown very clearly.
I have also noticed this same issue in Cyberpunk 2077, Alan Wake 2 & Oppenheimer (specifically around 25:40 when they're in the tent, lit by an Orange light/candle)

Let's start with the image that shows the issue, notice how the area around the candlelight is purple-tinted, and part of Geralt's face is purple-tinted also. It looks very wrong from a colour-accuracy perspective, and interestingly HDR @ 6500K is the only setting where it looks like this. IMG_4550.png

Next, HDR @ 8200K; This time the issue is gone. But the issue with 8200K for HDR is that it's incredibly dull, even with 100% saturation set in the HDR calibration tool it just looks washed out and blue (but blue isn't an issue, since it is 8200K after all, it's supposed to look more blue tinted).IMG_4549.png

And finally, HDR off. Again, the issue is gone. And no amount of messing around with the colour settings on the display can reproduce the issue that 6500K has with Orange lighting. So the issue must lie somewhere behind the scenes with how HDR in 6500K is handled, or I just have a faulty unit.IMG_4551.png

Basically, I have 2 questions.

1) Can other people (if anyone reads this) reproduce this issue in HDR @ 6500K? Not just in Witcher 3, in any game or content with Orange sunlight or candle-lit scenes.

2) If this is a known and widespread issue, can we expect some improvements in this area in a future (if we're still getting them) Firmware release?

This is really the only issue I personally notice with HDR on this monitor, and if a future Firmware release can eliminate or at least reduce this issue, this monitor will be practically perfect for me.

its not other games suffer from the same issue

I was replying to your comment about CP, you were the one that drew attention to the fact you don't use native HDR.

same issue here the blue tint at 6500k and the extremely dull and unsaturated 8200k made mcm105 unusable

i would suggest u to use the mcm104 at 8200k mode and using windows 11 nightlight at 10% when playing hdr games and the normal 6500k when using sdr content

I use MCM103, it looks okay. I use MCM105, it looks exactly like Joshy25's state, on all the games he noted, as well as youtube test videos. It's not just a matter of calibration. Something is off. You don't need to be dismissive.

I've already noted seeing a slight hue in some examples in Cyberpunk, is that your idea of dismissive? Or did you misconstrue my post above about general state of HDR implementation in games?

I've been able to dial out the hue seen in CP in the limited time I had last night, so for me at least calibration did help in this case by calibrating the display in Cinema mode @6500K to create the HDR profile. However, it wasn't as prominent as the OPs.

By all means, open dialogue is encouraged and needed for feedback. HDR colour accuracy is much trickier than SDR, and there seems to be some subjective opinions between 6500K and 8200K saturation levels with some users swaying for and against.

It's not at all subjective. On 103, and 104, the HDR colors look like the second and third screenshots no matter the color temp. On 105, and only on 6500K, do they look purple. All the same settings otherwise. So there is something off about HDR implementation on 105 at 6500K only, and that can't just be a preference issue.

I'm not going to get into a debate on why colour of all things is subjective 😅

Out of curiosity, did you experience the skin tone issues some reported on MCM104? Some users aren't able to pick which firmware is better for them, so my advice would be to stick to one or the other, at least for now.

One comment here is from someone who's already posted in the thread. The general consensus on MCM105 seems positive in regards to tone mapping. That being said, I have drawn attention to the feedback so don't feel it's falling on deaf ears. 👍
