XTU 4.4.0.4 causing CPU Thermal Throttling on G750JX

HI fellow G750jx users,

thanks to hmscott i was able to solve a very critical Thermal Throttling issue whilst benchmarking with the Intel(R) Extreme Tuning Utility.

As it seems the versions newer than 4.2.0.8 have an additional feature called "Power Limit Throttling" which could be causing that strange behaviour.

XTU 4.4.0.4 Stress Test (5 minutes) causes the i7 in our g70jx to unexpectetly activate thermal throttling without even reaching crititcal temperatures like 90° or higher:


XTU 4.2.0.8 Stress Test (5 minutes) in turn shows no sign of Thermal Throttling at all:


Thanks again to hmscott for being such a good help to all of us. I was about to open that thing, google for repaste guides, heatsink optmization and what not ;).

Moral of the Story: Don't always expect the worst. It could just be just one piece of software or driver.

My BIOS is 209. It could have been since I upgraded to 8.1. Not sure, but I haven't really changed anything else. Just the NVidia driver, and a shed load of Windows updates inc 8.1.

So the XTU stress run without throttling was before the upgrade to Windows 8.1/drivers/nvidia driver? Interesting...

I really can't be sure. But I haven't done anything else of that ilk. Just NVidia and WU.

Lowering volts got me that temperature... My room is also very cool right now too.

If i put fan to max it idles around 33 c lol

XTU is super weird, one time when I run it throttles at 80-85c next time there are no signs of throttling. I mean what the hell? hmscott I bet you remember when I was asking for help here few months ago when I just bought my JW. Then it used to throttle without undervolting and temps used to go up to 96c, but when I undervolted it stopped, however now even with undervolting it throttles at freaking 83c when the tjmax for 4700hq is 100c right? On the other hand I never really had any issues with my JW regarding the temps, they never go above 80c after hours of bf4/watch dogs or any other quite demanding game, GPU also, the max temp for GPU ever was 68c. So even though CPU throttles when running a stress test, there never were any issues with it regarding overheating, I always use it on my lap (with a cooling pad which actually is pretty crappy, I bought it for £ 5). So to summarize, if your CPU is thermal throttling by all means go for it and try to fix it, but don't stress if you're unsuccessful, as I said - in my case it never caused any problems and I've been using ROG for most demanding games and it never throttled under normal usage. (I always keep the CPU/GPU temps monitoring on so I know that it's true)

senttel, thanks, good to know, it isn't clear what is causing the lower temperature throttling if you were seeing it before 4.2.0.8.

So you were seeing low temp throttling on XTU 4.2.0.8 and before as well, not just on 4.4.0.4?

I guess the only way to know if it is unconnected to XTU is to uninstall XTU, and use a different program to monitor throttling, like hwinfo64 and run say 2-4 threads of something like prime95 which won't push temps up too high, and see if throttling shows up - if not then it is being induced by XTU.

Yes, I started seeing low temps thermal throttling on XTU 4.2.0.8, however I remember not running a stress test for few months after undervolting and seeing that it doesn't throttle anymore. So I only noticed that it throttles at 80-85c after some time.

By the way, if I uninstall XTU I won't be able to undervolt right? -.-

Intel XTU runs as a Windows service to apply the tuning. If XTU is uninstalled, it won't be able to run and apply the tuning at boot time.

But, I don't know if after boot you can shutdown/stop the Intel XTU service and still have the tuning applied. I would imagine that as part of the shutdown of the service it is possible that XTU will back out the tuning and restore the defaults as part of stopping, but it might not.

Asus GPU Tweak Tool can be exited after boot, after it has set the GPU / Memory speeds, and those changes stick.

Not sure what part of XTU is kicking in the low temp throttling. It might just be the app / stress test itself - and not the actual tuning applied.

I haven't visited the Intel XTU forum for quite a while, but it's possible they are already tracking this problem there...
