Would you remove the 1 TB & install a 7200 RPM 500 GB?

My notebook configuration came with a 256 GB SSD + a 1 TB HDD 5400 RPM.

I have a Seagate Momentus ST9500423AS 5400 RPM 500 GB HDD lying around.... is it worth it to swap the HDDs in favor of the 7200 RPM but lose 500 GB worth of disk space?

No. You already have the SSD for speed.

Depends on what you intend to do. If you are using the 1 Tb HDD for only storage then I'd say probably not as the 5400 RPM drive is going to use less power and give you more space. If you intend on installing programs on the conventional HDD or use NTFS folder redirection then I think it would be a good idea to put the 7200 RPM drive.

No, all I do on my other HDD is store my videos...

I have a large collection of movies... and I run them using a program called Smooth Video Project which plays videos at 60 FPS using your GPU even if the video frrame rate is originally lower so it gives you super smooth video...

would I even notice any difference in such a case or it wouldn't make any difference if the videos were on the 5400 or the 7200 rpm drive?

Thanks

Most ( all ? ) of the relatively new 1 TB drives perform very closely and in some cases above 7200 rpm drives.

Get the details of exactly what by doing some searching and look for performance reviews.

If not interested in doing the homework my answer would be no not worth it.

I have a 1 TB samsung drive as my second drive and it is exactly what I want!

right, thanks for the advice John, guess Ill just keep my 1 TB then and enjoy the space

Cheers man

Just got done swapping mine out with a 500GB Seagate momentus XT Hybrid Drive.

I only had the 5400RPM 1TB drive since mine is the bestbuy model. lol

Pretty sure it should be much faster

Thanks for linking that super smooth video project

I would suggest Just using a copy of 7 home premium 64 if you have one laying around.

I didn't and it took a whopping 12 hours total to swap out the drive.

burning recovery discs, swapping out drives, installing all the software...
