Windows 8 RTM & Lock-Ups

I have the G73JH-A1 and just installed the final Windows 8 Enterprise x64 (from work) on a Vertex 4 SSD. Setup went fine, it detected the video card (not sure exactly what's in here, may be the problem) and I was able to get it up and running. Synced with my MS Account and ran Windows Update. Found a Broadcom Bluetooth device, and that was pretty much it. Device Manager is clean (nice).

Windows 8 installed their own WDDM 1.2 drivers. In DevMan it showed as AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5800. After about 3 minutes of playing around, hard lock up. No mouse, couldn't do ANYTHING. Had to power down with the button.

I booted it back up and installed the new Catalyst 12.8 drives for Vista/Win7/WIn8 x64. They installed fine. DevMan now shows the display device as AMD FirePro M7820 or something similar. (Maybe 7810). What?? Again, I installed everything with the driver package and it said everything went fine.

But, with this driver and after a reboot, I have between 2-5 minutes of use before it simply locks up hard. Any ideas/suggestions?

1) I'd probably give ThrottleStop a shot to resolve your lockup issues. See http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?8943-G73-Freezing-Crashing-Issue-WORKAROUND-FOUND.

2) Are you running the latest firmware on your SSD? There have been similar problem reports in this forum on Vertex 4 drives.

It sounds similar to the ThrottleStop workaround (i.e. preventing the CPU from dropping down to a lower power mode C-State).

3) Driver conflicts may also result in lockups. Antivirus, AntiMalware, Firewall, Remote Access, and Disk Management software are the usual suspects. What have you installed?

You have a Radeon HD5870M (good card!) in your laptop. AMD is much more finicky about their reference drivers than nVidia is. I would advise trying the latest Windows 7 drivers that are certified by ASUS. Often the vendor has to custom tweak the AMD drivers for their particular notebooks. nVidia, on the other hand, supports virtually everything minus Sony (I wonder why ;)) and a handful of Fujitsu laptops.

I'm hoping it was just choosing High Performance power mode, as after doing that, and making sure under Processor power management, then Minimum processor state that Plugged in is set to 100% (meaning the CPU will never go to a lower rate), I have been good for 10 minutes. Hasn't gone this long yet. (Again, this is just after installing it, so it may lock as I type this).

(Also, I'm typing this on my work laptop, HP 8760w laptop, also VERY nice.) System SKU B2A83UT#ABA

Anyway, thanks again for the help. By the way, I made sure I got the 128GB Vertex 4 to the 1.5 firmware release before installing. It is rather zippy.

So far so good, let's hope it stays...

Well, I'm glad it was just the CPU throttling. Thanks for the tip!

Of course I don't know if it was the CPU throttling due to the SSD, the video, Windows 8 in general, etc.

I sure hope there is a permanent fix from MS, ASUS, etc. But, we have till at least Oct 26th for GA for Windows 8, so I'd imagine something will come down the pipe.
