Wifi issues with new g46vw

So I purchased an Asus g46vw from Bestbuy after reading many a glowing review, my problem is that the wireless connection seems horrid, I only get 2.6 Mbps download speeds according to speedtest.net while all my other devices get around 17, I already returned my first g46 because I thought it might have been a dud. What steps should I take to resolve this issue ?

Are you at full connection speeds(Full signal)? Goto the wifi driver settings and change it to max transmit power, and like max roaming in the advance tab in the device manager. It could also be the router assuming it's a cheap router

What's the manufacturer and model of your router?

Not quite sure, I have at&t u-verse, they call it a wireless gateway, I think that just means it's a router+modem, I dunno, where should I check ? also I typically have 4 or 5 bars (indicating my signal strenght is excellent) despite my slow download speeds. I have 3 other laptops and a desktop that all connect wirelessly and have 0 problems, my only issue is with the g46vw.

I'm having a similar issue with my new G75VW. It doesn't pick up my wireless signal as well as the other notebooks my family has in the house. Mine has the Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 Wireless Network Adapter and, if I had to guess, yours probably uses the same. Just a small quirk that we have to deal with I guess.

could you clarify it is SW or HW problem, install driver, set route to difference encryption, channel.
