Why does the G73SW downclock the GPU on battery so severely?

Hey everyone, new here. I just purchased my G73SW for dirt cheap used (I work at an electronic retailer and we had one on "super clearance" that I was able to grab). Now, I have never owned a "gaming" laptop before so I apologize if this is a common thing and I am just oblivious to it. On a brand new Windows 7 installation, with ALL power settings "off" (i.e. - maximum power no matter what), if I unplug the laptop from the power source, my GTX460m downclocks by exactly 75%, so it only uses a maximum of 25% power. Now, when I am trying to game, this renders the card pretty much useless. I cannot play ANY game (even CS) on a GPU running at 168MHz - it's simply ridiculous.

I can understand cutting power to save energy, but if I am trying to game "on the go," such as in a car, on a plane/train etc, I won't be able to! Doesn't that defeat the entire purpose of having a gaming laptop in the first place? Mobility? Now, I have two of these laptops that I can play with - Mine, and another one on clearance at my store. Both of these laptops will cut the power to the GPU when on battery power, so I am assuming that it is something encoded into the GPU bios and really has nothing to do with Windows or ASUS. But is there any way around this? I have a trip coming up in two months and I would like to be able to have some fun in the car that I will be stuck in for over 18 hours.

Any insight is appreciated - thanks!

FYI - I have three batteries for this thing, so no need for anyone to say "it doesn't matter the battery will die in an hour anyway lol"

This is exactly the reason why the VGA throttles back, to keep the battery lasting longer. The Graphics cards are power hungry and will drain your battery fast if running at full tilt. When you have it unplugged and try to run games, you will find that the game will lag and most likely stutter, because the graphics card doesn't have the full power it needs to keep on running, thus, killing your battery in record time lol. By the way, welcome to the ROG Forums 🙂

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, I was pretty sure that was the reason why, I just didn't want to believe it. Will the GPU throttle like this on all gaming laptops new and old? Or was this specific to the 460m? Thanks for the warm welcome!

I can force my G53 to run at full power I thought. I never do though because the battery literally dies in 30 minutes.
