It isn't a stupid assumption balundab, you are correct. But, it isn't that the people are morons, it is that they are allowing a moronic light to shine through them unabated by truth and reality.
You are forgetting about malevolent influences from mistakenly trusted sources - sources that take away truth and replace it with fantasy and confusion.
To the untrained mind it isn't easy to identify these influences, as they usually come from what they are led to accept as the most trusted in their local experience. It is the bald-faced lie, to deny good and be evil while putting on the face of good.
Gullibility is the hardest thing to get right. You need it to learn, but you have to filter anything coming in through such that you know it's important vectors - truth, source, motivation, and value - and what you are being asked to trade for it.
You are also right about the light of morons shining through from everywhere.
But, the people aren't morons, what has taken over their souls is the moron - being allowed to shine through the persons' inattentiveness to their lives - having given it over to nonsense instead of pursing truth.
To help those people, help those people replace their ill accepted assumptions with truth and reality. The truth will replace their fear, doubt, and faith - with something tangible - every little bit helps bring them back to themselves - and shutdown the moron shining through.
