What's wrong with my G550 performance?

Hi guys, I bought my G550 a while a go, I was pretty happy with it all this time, but I noticed that when gaming it seems to be under- performing.

At first I thought I am just asking it too much, playing games like Metal Gear 5 etc, but it has problems running World of Tanks, World of Warships etc, and any newish game if I set my resolution to 1920x1080.

If resolution is at 1600x , it runs any game quite well, on ultra in-fact.

I tried every solution I could find, I tried overclocking, I tried cleaning wents, I bought cooling pads, I used game boosters, I tried defraging my HDD's, I tried unparking my CPU cores, I made sure that the correct GPU is running the games, pretty much all the tips under the sun, and I still can't get it to run games as good as my friends have on their older and less powerful laptops.

I just don't know any more, my biggest problem is that I can't enjoy Elite Dangerous which I absolutely adore right now, on 1920x1080p it barely runs on medium settings, while my friend has a laptop with m7XX nvidia and seems to be running on ultra, so what gives?

My question, has anyone here played Elite Dangerous on their G550? Is my laptop underperforming, or working as intended and I should start looking into upgrading?

Thank you in advance!

Kind regards,
Aaron

Try older drivers , might do the trick. On a 860m I run drivers like almost a year old cuz the new ones are bit off. If you have Windows 10 make sure you have that 1511 update. The last one before it drove me mad. My video card was working all the time at 100% no matter what.
You could also find at what temp your laptop is running. The fans might be clan, but if the thermal paste is dead it makes little to no difference because the chip can't get out any heat.

So, here is what I think you should try (in the given order):
1) see what temps are you running: if very high -> thermal throttling -> you need new thermal paste (given that you said that you cleaned the fans and heat vents)
2) try older drivers, might do the trick
3) maybe a windows 10 clean install (if you have 10 and did the upgrade and never a clean install)

Hi there, now that you mention it, I did notice that computer acted more and more weird , the more I updated the drivers (the nvidia ones at least) , so are you saying i should downgrade all my drivers or nvidia ones?

About the heat, im not exactly sure, I have a cooling pad under it at all times when gaming, and temperature usualy stays at around 86 degrees hot.

I do run windows 10, clean install

I the way I think you should do the testing is downgrade nvidia drivers first. Test it and see if it works.

In theory at 86c there should be no throttling, even if your gpu is at 86c. It's a normal side effect of having only one heat spreader for cpu+gpu. But, what are your idle temps (at what room temp)?

As for the Windows, just make sure you have that 1511 fall update. It fixed maybe problems, including the crash after coming back from sleep.

My idle temps are at about 43-50, I will try to downgrade my nvidia drivers tomorrow and post what happens. Thanks for the tips

Hi, I've downgraded my NVIDIA drivers to the start of this year (second version after beta)

Elite Dangerous is running slightly worse now, but not by much, drivers may not be the issue?

And I checked that I currently have 1511 windows 10 installed

43-50 is not that low for idle. What is your ambient temp (approximately at least)?
How about you cpu usage on idle? Is it higher than + - 1%? How about ram usage? More than + - 1.8 GB?

One other thing to check for would be viruses/malware. Give it a scan with your antivirus and malware bytes (it's free, so no worries there).

Do you use qBittorrent or other torrent manager? Just yesterday I installed the new version of qBittorrent and when it ran my laptop seemed to behave like my 15 years old pc when I ask it run Eclipse and few applets in the same time. <- unlikely, but worth giving a shot.
The idea is, since when it behaves bad did other changes occur?

My CPU on idle is exactly 1%, my RAM is about 12% (which from 16gb is.... erm less than 1,8 i guess)

I do use torrents from time to time, but I use it from a trusted source, we have a country wide subscription based one here, so they keep it clean, and I would dismiss virus threats completely for now, simply because I reinstall windows once every 2 months , I've did a fresh install recently (made sure I have 1511 update), yet to no avail.

I would really like if someone with the same or similar machine could tell me if they can run Elite Dangerous and at which parameters , maybe my laptop is not suppose to run it well

All I can tell you is that I run wow, all maxed out at ~60fps with a 860m slightly overclocked and a underclocked cpu. If I go for high I am at ~90+fps.

I gave you my ideas. Hope that someone else can help you.

Why did you underclock your CPU?
