Upgrading the G75VW

Upgrading the G75VW is relatively simple: you just need a Philips screw driver. It’s just one screw keeping you out of the main hatch which covers the two 2.5″ hard drive spaces, two SO-DIMM clips and one of the fan filters, as you can see below.

Flip over the notebooks and unscrew the first hatch near the front:

By removing two screws on each, the hard drives can be popped out using the pull tags. Then unscrew the old drive if there is one via its side-screws and add the new drive into the housing, before reversing the process to put it back in.

Unscrew two screws and just give it a tug to the side before lifting it out.

The housing will take SSDs, hybrid drives (like the Seagate Momentus XT) and SSDs in any mix and match configuration you desire. If you want to enable RAID0 or RAID1 for two HDD or SSD, it is available via the BIOS.

Our G75VW has two 750GB Western Digital Black HDDs fitted
From here, the left-hand fan filter is accessible for cleaning, while the right fan filter requires removing another Philips screw and accessing a smaller hatch. Just to be clear: removing these two screws does not void your warranty. Also, as you’d expect, the battery requires just flicking the clip on the base to swap it out. No screw removal required.

However for the sake of transparency to our customers, please be aware of upgrade limitations. While the G75VW has four SO-DIMM slots in total; two of which are situated underneath the keyboard and accessing them requires chassis dismantling that voids your warranty so please plan your needs carefully before you buy.

These two above will be populated first, at the factory, meaning if you buy an G75VW with 8GB DDR3 but later want 12GB or 16GB, dropping in one or two extra 4GB SO-DIMMs is a perfectly warranty-safe upgrade as this requires simply opening the base as described above. However, if you require upgrading all four SO-DIMM slots, this can only be done by unscrewing all visible screws on the base, removing the battery and optical drive, then gently separating the the motherboard tray from the keyboard. Evidently this process is not designed to be user upgradable, but if you feel you are technically adept and accept that you will not be able to return the notebook at a later date, it can be done.

Hi guys,

I'm pondering a few upgrades for my G75VW, so far I've stuck to the user serviceable RAM upgrade to 24Gb, planning to get an SSD soon. My question is, if I only have a 10Mb/s broadband connection, is it still worth upgrading the wifi card? I'm not sure it will make a difference, anyone got some data?

Cheers,
echineko

you should check the options in the bios (if I am not wrong it's in the security tab -> interface security). unlock the 2nd hdd interface if necessary.

hi @zhouhanhui, i replied your pm before seeing this.

in your case, i suggest you go for Ripjaws SO-DIMM F3-1600C11S-8GRSL, the reasons being:

1. there is no obvious performance improvement even if you put in high performance ram's with tighter timings (and the results are inconsistent);
2. ram's these days are not cheap. it's better to get a 1.35V set because you can use it in haswell laptops, too.

if possible, get them in pairs. i am still not sure if a single ram chip can run in dual-channel mode.

I am fairly new to asus. I have a G75vw and am really confused. It comes with 1Terabyte of hard drive space correct? So the other space provided is for a SSD? Reason I ask is because I have an empty slot besides the hardrive, but when I go to my "computer" It depits that I have 2 disk drives. 1 that shows OS (C:) 196 gigs free of 347 and beside that it shows DATA (D:) 558 gigs free of 558. I have no idea what or why it is this way, it wasn't like this when I first purchased. Is something wrong? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Your hard drive is partitioned into 2 logical drives. If you didn't partition it, did someone else "repair" on your computer for you?

You can still add another drive in your open bay. If it is just additional data, it will most likely install as data drive E:. The added drive can be an SSD, HDD or hybrid drive, whatever you want or can afford. If you go SSD, I suggest you read all the threads discussing SSD upgrades on the G75VW if your intent is for the system to boot from the SSD.

@david, good point, though the drive will add as data drive F: (D: is the DVD drive, E: is the second data partition). ASUS generally partitions that way - I don't know why, but when reinstalling Windows, data on the second partition is preserved.
I am disturbed because I cannot break my system...found out there were others trying to cope! We have a support group on here, if your system will not break, please join!

Am I the only one that wants to upgrade the video card? Is that even possible on the G75VX laptop? I have the 670mx, which is powerful, but I would like more power without replacing the laptop which is otherwise working perfectly.

Hello, sorry for double posting but I just wasnt sure how active these forums are. Anyway I purchased Crucial 8GB Kit (4GBx2) DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) CL11 SODIMM 204-Pin 1.35V/1.5V Notebook Memory Modules CT2CP51264BF160B to upgrade to the 16GB cap for this laptop, but everyime I install the RAM (either one module or both) the laptop refuses to boot. The screen wont even come on, the lights turn on like its trying to boot but quickly go back out. As soon as I take the RAM back out though, it boots up just fine. Any suggestions?

Thank you.
