Upgrading The G750JW - Max Compatibility

PentiumCore

Hey,

Well as you many know I ended up buying a fairly low-spec'd G750 (by accident, lol) my question is, what kind of upgrade options are available from the other variants? I will so far be putting in a 256GB SSD as my main OS/App drive and leave the other 750GB for docs/data etc.

I won't be upgrading anytime soon thats for sure but its good to know what is available for my laptop so when the times comes I have the information handy to go ebay prawling. 🙂 For example:

1) I would like the 1080p non-glare screen. Is this easily retrofittable? If not, are there any aftermarket options? The screen is my first priority, I absolutely hate the resolution with a vengeance.

2) Secondly, is the GPU on these laptops MXM? As in, can I purchase a GTX780M of ebay and simply pop it in? Is the heatsink / cooling different on the 780M?

3) Relevant to the above, if I attempt to upgrade the GPU do I need a more bigger power-block or any other PSU upgrades?

4) I'm assuming this laptop has 4 x RAM dimms, or am I mistaken? If not, I'd like to go straight to 16GB seen as RAM is so cheap now. If so, which RAM should I upgrade to? I currently have Ballistix RAM in my desktop and they are fairly good but obviously you guys know more then me.

Thanks!

I can answer #4; you have 2 RAM slots empty above the hard drive bay that take 1.35V RAM (1.5 I believe make Haswell toast, and it's not so tasty), and then the other 2 are on the opposite side of the motherboard so require the keyboard out to get to those extra 2, to make a total of 4.

I can answer part of number 2. The 780m is alot bigger than our card, so if it is MXM, the max upgrade would be a 770m. Let me know if you find out. I have the 765m too and want to know if i can upgrade! 😄

you cannot put a 780 in a G750JX or JW because ASUS uses a custom socket, not MXM. Also, the cooling system for the 780 is completely different as you can see googling pics of the G750JH. The only way you can get more FPS in games is by overclocking, so if you feel the card isn't being cooled properly, you can repaste it. it MIGHT be possible to put the 770M from a JX into a JW but I'm not sure if the socket is the same.

Awh, what a shame! I was really hopeing to upgrade to the 770/780M in the future when prices fall. So If I HAVE to buy a GPU it would have to be out of an Asus laptop?

Yes, unless someone does a tear-down and confirms that is is MXM or not.

IIRC, it is MXM, but custom size.

This is blasphemy.

Can anyone confirm if any other model / and or manufacturer uses the same 770M cards in our 750's? As I would like to upgrade to at LEAST that spec in the future to preserve the laptop for around 5-6 years.

This has truly screwed my hopes and dreams. I only bought this model as I couldn't afford anything higher, infact, even this was out of the question but the design and spec of it made it kinda worth it. I wish I did some research before buying now. 😞

Anyone looking to get rid of their 770M?

Just to confirm... The GTX770M is a direct swap with the GTX765M? As in, they both have the same heatsink & powerbrick? (If so, then I'll just beg on the forums for a few years until someone sells me one, hehe.)

Thanks!
