Upgrading G75Vx

Nice to be here at last. Since past few days I am proud owner of G75 VX. I like everything on it except screen.

I should have name the post downgrading to win 7. Post was heavlily edited, I mean completetly.

So I have sucesfully downgraded G75Vx to windows 7 and managed to install all the drivers except two. Laptop is working flawlesly, I dont think I am used on that kind of speed.

I will briefly explain steps I used. It all actually went quite fast and well.... so get to the point.
Guessing you have already installed other empty HDD or SSD in bay 2 and have set it up... must be MBR, at least for my version of w7... all this I did from w8

First of all, You shuld disable from the power option so...
1) Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options\System Settings
scroll down and shut off - Turn on fast startup...... This is preventing computer to access the bios....

2) Next tweak your bios - go to security - secure boot - disable
again in bios go to boot menu and "enable launch CSM"
Now next time you enter your BIOS you will see all the boot options, at this moment inside my laptop I have Win8 HDD, I have one empty MBR SSD, and flash USB with win 7... Flash drive and original HDD with Win8 both came up in BIOS as boot devices

3) switch off computer and take out your HDD with windows8, leave only empty SSD and bootable flash drive inside the laptop

4) do nothig else but restart, computer will recognise the bootable flash drive and will boot from it....

rest is easy, install the win7 onto the SSD(or other HDD)

do all necessary with win 7 updates drivers..... oh yes! the drivers... I went bananas when I found out that I will not be able to use wireless internet...well despite what was saying aroud here in forum I managed to installl the wireless, actually I have installed all but USB3 and ethernet... will edit if I find it.

Ok so for the graphic I have used the same driver that came with the laptop, I mean I used windows 8 driver and installed succesfully...

At some point i was really desperate in not being able to find the rest of the drivers... So I went for a free solution "slim driver free", small free utility that found all the nevest drivers for VX except feature for USB3.0 and ethernet, but so far I dont mind it, I know I'll find it..
... and voila...
I am able to play all the games in win 7...
however, I found win 8 to be at least double faster than win7, but not in the games, in the games according to tom's hardware win 7 performs just as good as win8 if not better...

My next project is get rid of win7 straight today... why?... because I like win 8 better, and will use SSD as a cache memory for win 8...

Have I mentioned that my original HDD with windows 8 was out on secure all the time while I was doing this.

Thank to all people from forum, if wasn't for reading this forum I would have never done it correctly

a nice writeup 🙂 thanks a lot for the efforts.

i suggest that you install w7 in uefi mode. imo, the bios in the g-series laptops is tuned to perform better in uefi.

however, the best is still w8 for your machine. there are 2 common wifi adapters, i bet the one you have is not .ac. for ethernet driver, you can try AR813X AR815X Family Drivers. for usb 3.0, i am not sure if the latest from intel would help.

good luck.

...been away for a while, I have found all the drivers for W7 on G75VX, I will post the screenshot later on with the setup I have and all names of the devices/drivers installed.

Still waiting for my other SSD in order to install win8 in the cache mode with G75 hybrid disk... don't know will I get any better performance than I have now, but it is worth to try at least to prove it is possible and how much sense is there to do so with hybrid disk...

I am currently offshore, so this will probably wait a month or so...

also I tried migrating w8 to ssd, worked flawlessly, I had the boot time around 10s, and full reboot around 17s...

quite the same as with fresh install of w7 with SP1 and updates up to Jan 2013...

@rewben: thanks mate, it was default setup to do so in UEFI... I have also used GPT....

Actually I was away with gaming machines windows and have not been tracking for a while, and so many things have changed and I got pretty rusty, honestly I did not had a clue what is UEFI, what would I use GPT or MBR and way it works, as well not aware all the new things like intel smart response all that was a strange to me so I needed some literature...
as I said earlier thanks to people from ROG forum I have a lightning fast Lap now...

I'm having trouble accessing bios on g75vx and I'm curious about what you said in regard to disabling Fast Startup. That would make sense to me but I can't seem to find that option in windows 8.

BTW, F2 esc del don't seem to work for me and I hope this may help if someone can guide me to it.

EDIT: FOund it and it worked. Thanks for this write-up!
