Trying to better understand Instant On

Ok, so there are a couple things I don't really get about Instant On. First of all, when you enable Instant On, how are you supposed to put the computer into IO's special sleep mode? Does it replace Windows' Sleep Mode in the Start menu, or do you just shut the lid? Secondly, I have read that if the battery drops below a certain point, IO backs up the current state of the machine to the hard drive so you don't lose your data. Does this utilize Windows' built-in hibernation? I have disabled hibernation on my machine because space is a premium on my SSD (especially since I have a sizable Steam collection), so if I use Instant On with Windows hibernation disabled, will I lose everything if the battery dies? I've searched online, but all I've managed to find about IO sounds like marketing releases, and I've been unable to find technical explanations. Thanks.

Bit of an old thread but here goes.

Like a lot of the post I am trying to work out the difference between Asus InstantOn and Windows 8.1 sleep and hybrid sleep (not enabled by default) on my laptop.

As far as I can tell InstantOn and hybrid sleep do the same sort of thing in different ways - save the computer state to memory and harddisk so you get a quick startup but if "something" happens then there is the harddisk save to do a normal hibernate startup from.

So far what I have come up with is

InstantOn in performance mode and hybrid sleep basically do the same thing - stays in sleep state till the power goes then switches to normal hibernate.

InstantOn in battery saving mode stays in sleep for 4 hours then does a normal hibernate.

So really whats the difference between InstantOn in performance mode and the normal windows hybrid sleep?

The post above this one says that the laptop was reporting slightly longer standby time with InstantOn performance mode so if I had to make a guess I would say that InstantOn is optimised more for the laptop hardware being that its a bit of Asus software running on an Asus machine. Where windows hybrid sleep is a more generic thing designed to work on any hardware.

Any thoughts?

Update from Asus support

Asus InstantOn 3.0.6 (the latest version) will not function correctly in Windows 8.1 and no idea if it will be updated or not.
As far as the support guy could tell the only difference between InstantOn in performance mode and Windows Sleep is maybe the wakeup time if anything.
