Trying to better understand Instant On

Ok, so there are a couple things I don't really get about Instant On. First of all, when you enable Instant On, how are you supposed to put the computer into IO's special sleep mode? Does it replace Windows' Sleep Mode in the Start menu, or do you just shut the lid? Secondly, I have read that if the battery drops below a certain point, IO backs up the current state of the machine to the hard drive so you don't lose your data. Does this utilize Windows' built-in hibernation? I have disabled hibernation on my machine because space is a premium on my SSD (especially since I have a sizable Steam collection), so if I use Instant On with Windows hibernation disabled, will I lose everything if the battery dies? I've searched online, but all I've managed to find about IO sounds like marketing releases, and I've been unable to find technical explanations. Thanks.

I don't understand Instan on either. Is that some kind of a software where it speeds up the booting process? Or is that the crap where you press a button like express gate where you can browse over internet on a watered down browser or something?

Someone clear this up if InstantOn is necessary or if it's just a bloatware.

Instant On is a fast boot App as far as I know, it basically skips the normal boot POST and goes straight to windows/login screen.

Hey guys, here's an explanation from the "Asus website".
I hope this will help you.

ASUS Instant On powered by SHE II Technology

Super Hybrid Engine II incorporates elements of its SHE predecessor and builds on the vitals of better battery performance. Instant on allows notebooks to resume in under 2 seconds* and stay in standby for up to 15 days* . Importantly, should battery levels fall below 5%, data is automatically saved and secured on the hard drive*.

*Resuming from hibernation on a mainstream notebook can typically take 30-60s.
*Normal standby time before battery drains on mainstream notebooks is 3-5 days
*Removing or draining the battery when a notebook is left in standby will lose the resume data and potentially a users work!

No, that's the same marketing description I've found all over the web that does not answer the specific questions I asked above. From what I understand, Instant On is not invoked during a normal cold boot, it is a low-power standby state which allows quick resume (which is not the same as quick boot, you aren't really booting). I understand the concept, I just had some specific questions about it, so if anybody can answer the questions I asked above, that would be great.

yeah, you are right!
it's for quick resume, and not for fast boot.
the technology name is a little misleading IMHO!
people may think, "wow this PC must boot fast" well, sorry to inform you it won't
they should call it "instant Resume'.

I guess it's just another "gimmick" to sell more computers, like the failed "Express Gate".

I sell ASUS laptops for a living and I still have no idea what purpose instant ON serves.

Instant on replaces Windows Sleep mode. Do you have the Windows gadget running? It'll tell you the anticipated life with it on compared to standard Sleep.

Sleep boots the system in 2-3 seconds, but doesn't backup your work, so in 2-3 days if your battery dies in sleep mode you lose unsaved data.
Hibernate saves your Windows session and your work, even if your battery dies, but it takes just as long to boot as a cold boot.

Instant on saves your Windows session and your work (like hibernate), but still boots the system in 2-3 seconds (like sleep). Plus it'll last anywhere up to 15+ days, depending on your battery capacity and its charge. Best of both worlds.

If you sleep or hibernate your system - use this instead! (You paid for it + it's better!) If you never use sleep and always shut down, you can remove it 🙂

I don't really know if it "replaces sleep mode", but rather enhances sleep and hibernation modes.
The idea I get from this SHE II technology is that it gives your laptop longer battery life in sleep and hibernation modes, and quicker resume times from both modes.
then there's the added plus of "backup of files" if battery power falls below 5%, something that Windows sleep mode can not do.
But who really leaves there laptop idol for up to "15 days" to really take advantage of Instant On?
I know not me lol.

That is a great video! If I ever want to make a commercial, I'm gonna hire that guy {the guy that created the storyboard for the video, that is)!
