Kid had his laptop plugged directly into the wall, despite the surge suppressor being closer.

Bad afternoon storm, comes home to find two new issues:

► Sound out of one side of onboard speakers only.

► Battery won't work. At all. I think the display shows it as charged, but it isn't powering the laptop whatsoever.

Not sure what can be done about the speakers, but is there any way to attempt a reset of the battery? We tried leaving it out overnight, but that did nothing.

Really, any reasonable suggestions are welcome.

That said, are there authorized service centers for these things?

I think some parts of your mobo and sound card are fried. If in warranty take it to an ASUS repair center. If not, well.... it's better to buy a new laptop instead of putting more money in this one, since things like this might happen again.

We may not have a choice, as the battery continues to drain while not recharging. Still, most notebooks work without the battery installed, so long as it's plugged into an outlet, right?

Yes mine stay's plugged in all the time. I have no idea how good or bad the battery is, It still works when the lights go out. But then in plugged into a UPS.

Yes your NB will work without the battery in place, and just plugged into the power brick.
But it sounds like your MOBO is most likely fried, as others already said.
You should upgrade to the G750 series, if you go the home owners route.
Check out prices, and file your claim accordingly.
