thin line at top of G75vw screen

It's an annoying thin line at the very top of my screen that has appeared all of a sudden after 2 years of flawless performance. It quivers, it doubles up, it changes its length according to the horizontal length of any window opened, but stays put about 4 mm from the top of the screen. Have even upgraded my Nvidia driver. But no help. Asus tech support is unable to provide any clues. Microsoft tech support says it doesn't show on his screen on remote assistance and it may be a resolution issue.

Any idea what this may be and how I can get rid of it?

Look forward to any help

Are you able to connect an external monitor to duplicate your notebook screen and see if the problem shows up there too?

If the external monitor is fine, then it sounds like the problem should be related to just your notebook screen.

You're right, connecting it to an external monitor would help zero in on the issue but I haven't been able to connect it yet. Meanwhile I was wondering if this may have anything to do with a Windows 8.1 upgrade wherein a minor tweak would do the trick. Anyway, thanks for writing in.

If the external monitor does not have the line then I would check the display cable. does the line change if you move the screen around? Those little buggers can cause some strange things. I have a friend who's display cable causes his screen to look like the laptop is getting hacked (really cool looking actually) if he moves it to just the right position.

I would tend to air on the side of a hardware issue not a software issue here... but to be sure can you also boot it into a live linux distro to see if it has the line there? this would indicate a windows problem and not a hardware issue...

That reminds me that we may also want to check the display inside the bios (tap 'F2' at power up for a Win7 system), or maybe Windows Safe Mode if it's not as easy to check in Linux?

The strange thing about this line is that it seems to replicate the top 2mm slice of my screen window. So, the portion above the red cross box at far right is red, or where there is a blue icon the corresponding portion is blue. When I decrease or increase the size of any open window, the line correspondingly gets shorter or longer, but stays at a fixed position on top. I wonder if this is the first sign of more deterioration to come.
