Suggestions for keeping CPU cooler during heavy loads

I am using a Asus G750JS and doing large format renderings using Maya and 3ds max. The cpu typically gets to 88C. Is there any way to help alleviate the heat off of the CPU?

brinchn27, 88c isn't too high for a heavy load on a G750JS, it is a good low temperature for a high temperature reading under load on an Optimus based laptop with a Haswell 4700HQ.

Some doing the same work have complained about getting over 95c, and getting thermal throttling - reduced performance causing slow / long completion times for their rendering runs. They were forced to drop the JS and moved to another platform after trying several JS's.

If you use hwinfo64 during the rendering runs, it will catch and log thermal throttling events. Run it in the Sensors only mode, and you can see lots of good temp, voltage, etc info during the run, and there are 4 lines tracking thermal throttling on each core.

As part of helping out dblkk with high temps, we came up some methods to reduce the temperature to stop the thermal throttling, while keeping up performance as high as possible. If you run into thermal throttling, you can read this and associated threads on what we did.

Hey hmscott, Big thanks! So far i have been doing test renders of medium subdiv poly surfaces, medium light cache, and medium res.. However for production renders those will be bumped up as well as the resolution making it even heavier. I will keep you up to date on the temps they reach. Typically these high res renders take hours to complete and i was hoping to avoid any overheating issues or frying the chips. Thanks for the response once again!

Hey hmscott....Did a test over the weekend on a 1-1/2 hour render and the only conclusive statement I can make is that using the GPU tweak program and turning the fans on at max while rendering keeps the CPU below 84/85 according to Real Temp. So thank goodness for GPU Tweak.

brinchn27, the GPU Tweak Full fan is only supposed to be for the GPU, but you and others have noticed that the increased airflow helps reduce the CPU temps a few degrees too 🙂

There is a bit of a rough program, early in development, that lets you control the CPU and GPU fan speeds called Notebook FanControl.

Notebook FanControl version 1.11.19 works for my G750JH, using the Asus Zenbook UX32LN template.

Be careful though, it has lost control before, and the sliders lose effect, and you have to reboot to clear it's effect. I don't need the maximum cooling, so I have uninstalled it.

Drop the slider down just below Auto for 100% fan speed 🙂


Update:

Guys, look at your GPU temps at idle with Notebook FanControl loaded and set on Auto. I found that the Notebook FanControl Asus Zenbook UX32LN Template Auto setting is incorrect for the G750, it left my GPU temp at 60c instead of the normal 42c.

If you want to live under Notebook Fan Control, please spend some time creating a new Template for the G750 that works correctly at Auto - otherwise you will be forced to adjust the Fan Speed manually all the time. Please post the working template you created back here and to the developer of Notebook FanControl, it would be very helpful 🙂

Leaving Auto on without a correct template may damage your GPU due to overheating. I have uninstalled Notebook FanControl until such time as a template with a working Auto setting is available.

Please be careful, and always watch your CPU/GPU temps while Notebook FanControl is installed 🙂

hmscott, thanks for the suggestion but is there any benefit to using the suggested program opposed to the GPU Tweak which already turns on the fans for the CPU. When rendering in V_Ray i find it extremely helpful to turn on the Overclock and Fan which boosts the CPU fan all the way to 25,500! I think that is really the key to keeping the CPU cool during renders. Previously as stated, the CPU was hitting 88.

I have read the link you attached previously about dblkk and his heat issues during rendering and it didnt sound like he tried out turning on the fan speed to decrease his CPU temps instead of sacrificing CPU power and undervolting.

brinchn27, dblkk made a lot of posts, and I do recall he tried the Full Fan option, but didn't like the noise it made. He takes his laptop on client sites and couldn't allow the fan noise to get that high.

Have you tried the manual setting of Notebook FanControl? The point wouldn't be to run at 100%, it would be to run it just a bit higher than the stock G750 fan speed - somewhere in between auto and max speed - to cool things down a bit more without the noise.

For the G750JW/JX/JH there isn't a Full Fan Option in Asus GPU Tweak - it's a different tool - so Notebook FanControl is the only option. Not sure about the G751 yet, oddly noone with a G751 has reported trying Asus GPU Tweak, I guess they haven't strayed outside their G751 forum playground and stumbled over here yet 🙂

Note that there isn't a G750 template for Notebook FanControl that correctly does Auto speed yet, see my Update in my post above for details.

jobwallis, the G750JM/JS/JZ are the only laptops with the Asus Tweak Tool Full Fan control option. It is called the Asus GPU Tweak for Laptops, and only runs on those laptops.

The Asus GPU Tweak for Graphics cards is likely the one you are using, and doesn't have a GPU Full Fan control option.
