ROG G751JY - Windows 10 -Backlight issue

Ok, so i've just got back my laptop from support and they changed my MB. Everything fine so far. I decided to jump from win 8.1 to 10 right away. Did it, and keyboard backlight stopped working. So here's what i already tried.
- Installing and reinstalling several times most updated ATK drivers.
- Tried the procedure proposed in the sticked thread https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?56496-G751-How-to-change-the-Steam-Shadowplay-buttons-and-...
- Tried installing older drivers
- Called the extremely useless call center, where they told me "install ATK, if it doesnt work u have to wait for win 10 update (not specified, just meh)
- Wanna point out that when i received back with win 8 lights were working and even now the CAPSLOCK red dot works normally. Also the ROG button on the right pad and steam buttons doesnt work
- I dont have any problems with other FN+ functions, except ofc from f3-f4 which controls the backlights.

I'd appreciate any help, thank you. this is extremely bothering since i often stay at pc at night with no lights and i cant see a damn 😕

Just to be clear here - you downloaded the Win10 ATK drivers, not the lastest Win8.1 drivers, right?

The problem is obviously driver related. I assume you completely wiped the ATK drivers currently installed and only then attempted another one?
It could be that the new ones installed over the old ones.

yes i always wiped out old drivers before installing new ones, and yes it's latest win 10. Dont' know what to do more honestly

Have you just "upgrade" leaving all your information at place ?
Have you clean install win10 afterward or performed the suggest GUIDE: HOW TO (EASILY!) UPGRADE FROM WIN7 SP1/8.1 WITHOUT GOING THROUGH THE UPGRADE PROCESS ITSELF... ??

if it's yes for 1st Q, no to the 2nd.... then wonderful news: you now know you MUST clean install your OS, cuz MS just like to screw around ppl's pcs.

Do you mind please be more specific, which post in that thread are you referring to ?

P.S after ATK driver installation you MUST reboot in order for the backlight fn keys to work.

No i didnt'leave my data there. I'm not sure if that's what you call clean install, because at first i upgraded to win 10 keeping my data. then, because of persisting of SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION (win32kfull.sys) error [besides, that was main reason cause i sent to repair and it still happened] i did the full system reset without keeping any data, so my pc was "as new" after this procedure, except from the absence of asus default programs like ROGMacro keys etc..
As for the post i linked i meant i tried this:
The manual way:
You press Windows Key + R and type in regedit
You go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\ASUS\
Click the ATK Package folder
Look for TurnOffKeybdLight on the right panel
You double click it, switch to Decimal (Hexadecimal by default), and type in after how many seconds you want the keyboard backlight to turn off (60 seconds by default)
Restart your laptop for changes to apply

anyway nothing happened, and yes i always reboot my pc after installing/removing atk drivers. thanks for your help guys!

good... that means less OS problems as you encountered.

don't change registry until you actually have working backlight fn combo.
you need to work one step after the other... don't pile one problem upon the other.

Try that:
  • download the windows 10 x64 ATK, not the win8.1 ( guess you know that one )
  • extract the zip
  • MAKE SURE to UNINSTALL any previous ATK packages.
if you do perform uninstall -> REBOOT !
  • DISABLE ANY INTERNET ACCESS ( I.E wifi, ethernet, usb celluar stick etc... )
  • install setup.exe with "run as admin" ( right click on it )
  • as it finishes -> reboot
  • after reboot make sure that hcontrol.exe is automaticly running in the background
  • try to press the Fn+F3/4 keys ( 3= decrease, 4=increase backlight )

P.S... I have a little suspicion that when you got back your laptop from the lab, they put a NON-backlight keyboard.
if you can check with the lap with part num they've put inside... this page might help you...

I tried all of that (disabling internet access was a passage i missed before) but still no success. The prog is correctly running in background (even if 32b i dunno if this is an issue and should be 64)
As for the keyboard replacement i hope not, it would be a proper fraud since they declared they changed only my mainboard and bottom case (it had a bump crack on a side, just exterior). Beside, that could have been difficult since i sent it to italian assistance center (where i live) but my keyboard layout is french since that's the version i bought online..

well.. I did some checking...For the backlight FN combo to work... you only need ( after installation ) hcontrol.exe to run.
all the rest of the files in that ATK HoyKey folder are for many other features.

it seams from that screenshot that you've modded hcontrol.exe on the 7/7/15 - why ?
I guess at this level of "thing not working" that you've already uninstall the atk, and installd it from scratch and you have NOT continue to performing my guide, that instructs to alters the hcontrol.exe.
1st get your Hcontrol working as it should originally, then move to perform any modification if you want to ( create always backup of the orig files !)

try even to install latest atk for windows 10 but the x32 not the x64 version ( i know it sounds silly, but as you can read my guide, it actually can solve problems ).
The link can be found here, under ATK ACPI ->open the link -> change to win10 x32 -> download proper file.

Hi I have just received my notebook from the support after replacing the MB due to some issues.

Previously, my keyboard backlight is still working (even in WIN10), right after the MB is replaced, the problem arise.

Have this problem been resolved? I have tried multiple times on the solution/workaround, doesn't seem to work on my system.

Please help.. I have just used it for 2 months..
