Repasted G750JX, shocking result.

I just recently did a repaste on my G750 and it turns out my temps lowered down by a staggering 10-15*C BOTH on CPU and GPU

My past temps were 83 max record on the CPU and 82 on the GPU

EACH TEST WAS DONE FRESH AFTER REBOOT -- TEMPS RECORDED WITH CPUID HWMonitor

CPU used handbrake bench, before 83*C, after 71*C

GPU used Furmark (Burn In 15min 1920x1080) before 82*C, after 68*C


The process took me 6 hours, ( of course I will be careful ) but when I pulled off the GPU heat sink, there was crap EVERYWHERE.. all over the board, even under the plastic protectors of the chips.


They use this sort of weird.. "paste" looks like it's some blue-tack like strip you just put down, unless it's machine applied.. it looks extremely formal. It was practically dry in my understanding.. after 9 months use on low-end games ( I play stuff like Warcraft 3 mostly with my friends, and high-end games on the side, temps never exceeded 65-70 on the GPU Tweak report )

I was literally scraping off the old stuff with a paste spreader, it looked like a cracked wall, and crumbled like plaster.



Replaced with Arctic MX-4 (I didn't use silver, though I could have for the main chips on the die, but everything else was quite small and difficult not to make a mess, I didn't want to risk getting it onto the board.)

What ever that paste is that came stock, it's simply terrible.. 10*C I understand is quite the improvement. Also got a chance to clean out my fans which was nice.

HMSCOTT!! ;D I used a guitar pick to spread my MX-4! It worked wonders, it got really, really nicely thin and even, too! I didn't use a credit card because the edges seemed a little too rough and also too big but a guitar pick really did the trick.

The K5 I must admit was a real b!tch to spread.. and I mean it, it's viscosity is like macho cinder putty for the burly builder laying down a wall to stop a tank. Almost like.. near dry chewing gum.

So far temps idle are 45*C on the CPU and 38*C on the GPU. CPU idle higher I assume with all the programs I have on startup.

Running WoW currently. Temps dropped down 8-10*C prior to repaste. I'm happy again. ;d Hope it lasts through the summer.

Sounds good, I would assume that K5 will seal up at the edges to stop moisture from escaping and drying out quickly, so this re-pasting should be good for a long time. From where did you end up ordering the K5?

I thought you were going to use MX4 on the CPU, K5 on the other parts to meet the gaps, and MX4 on the GPU (did you redo the GPU too?)

No pictors today! I'd rather not.. my application was very messy.. i was nearly tempted in putting all the K5 into a plastic ziplock bag, flattening it and using a razor blade to cut myself squares it was so thick. :c

Thinking to do my PS3,4 also... they draw a lot of heat.
is this what you ordered? can I use the K5 on all chips or I have to throw AMX4 in the mix??? you said you applied AMX4 on the CPU and GPU if am correct.

I'm trying to do my Playstation, too. The PS3. You need K5 pro as on the PS3 they use pads I believe so normal pate won't fill the gap.

I cannot remember what you need to open it. I think it's a TORX-A 8.

Yes, that's K5 Pro. I might use the K5 on an old laptop and test it's heat transfer compared to paste on the CPU die, will be interesting.


The way to apply K5 is you carve out a generous amount, but you won't use all of it. You need two tools to apply it, you can do it with one, but I used two.

Place the cement on the chip of choice with a single motion scrape from left to right and then use the edge of said chip to 'scrape' lightly against the tool to make the K5 come off.

You'll have a wedge shape paste application. You then use the same tool, or another tool in your left hand, and scrape in the opposite direction, from right to left, scraping after. Keep doing this until you get a nice 'pad' looking result. Make sure the surface is somewhat shaped like the top of a house.


Otherwise you can just put a glob on top and let the sink squish it down, I'd rather make sure the chip is covered, and add a little extra to be squashed over. It doesn't matter if it's a little thick, it's a 'pad' after-all. However the thinner the better, and the cooler your machine will become.

My MX4 application (note.. MX4, not AMX4, that sounds like a race track ;d ) was extremely thin I could almost see my reflection on the copper sink. Always go as thin as you can, as CPU / GPU die paste is not meant to be a 'bridge' like K5 is, but a filler for all the imperfections (like tiny scratches) on the surface of the elements pressing together.

hmmm darnassus, i am thinking about repasting my GPU any time soon as well, and if i do it i will use that K5Pro as well i think. even though it will be a pain to apply it, will order me some.

still a pain though that there is no way to measure the actual temps of the vRAM chips then we could really see if it helps or not. came across this as well:

Wulff, this research article measured the K5-Pro W/m, and it is about the same 5 W/m:

It pays to look up the actual numbers, and tests, and do some research before dis-assembly, and purchase.

There are thin liquid solutions now, as well as tough to apply Diamond mash, it comes down to experimentation, and trial and measurement.

Experimentation with material and application on an easy access desktop CPU would be easier to judge the final selection before moving on to the laptop.

yeah i was looking at the numbers as well and noticed as well that those gap filler/ thermal pads have less thermal conductivity then grease, but after sarching the net for a while i couldnt find anything better to fill the gaps for the vram then the 5W of that k5pro or those other pads. so i might order some of that. Since its hard to believe then that asus found something to fill up those gaps that has much more conductivity then this K5 Pro stuff. for the actual gpu itself i will use either the noctua or as5 stuff since i have some of that already here. And no i will not dissasemble it unless im 100% confident with the choice of tim and gap filler i want to use.

It seems the wrong choice to use grease on everything since darnassus mentioned the grease he used on the vrams dried out completly

I bought a thermo gun to gauge how hot my Vrams got, but I never had the stones to operate my JX while it's disassembled with the motherboard sitting out of the case so I could actually measure it.

But see the thing is, only the three metal chips were dry with paste, the other black chips I don't believe even get hot.. this of course a theory.

P.S. I repasted my Playstation 3, and oh by the Naaru was it terrible to do.. an absolute mess. Used K5 with that, too.. works great. Was so very gross inside, too. :c

ok ok, , you almost convinced me that this k5pro is the right choice, hell have had it in mind the moment i started to think about a repaste. looking at a picture of a gtx880m i wonder what those 3 grey metal chips are then but thanx for pointing out to me that in ur case those got hot enough to dry out that mx4 paste you used. perhaps it was more due to the fact there wasnt a good seal between the cooling plate and the chips. hard to know i guess. Will order k5 today and when i have it i will try it out here
