1 year warranty was up a few days ago, so decided to repast CPU and GPU. For the TIM I used Tuniq TX-4, was going to use Coollaboratory Liquid Pro, but TX-4 was close enough in performance, and less risk.
Things to note:
- The warranty seal was already broken on the CPU. (G74 was bought brand new from ASUS through Amazon) Looks like when they drilled (makes it harder to remove) the center of one of the screws it spun the tag and broke it. Pretty irritating, because if I ever had to send my G74 in for warranty, I would have gotten screwed during that 1 year.
- Not for the average person do this. 3 of the 5 connectors are of the most ridiculous design ever. 2 have latches and are pretty easy, if u don't have patience you will break any one of those 3 connectors... why they didn't use the latch design on all 5 connectors I will never know, other than saving them 30 cents per laptop
- Original TIM, got under the protective film of both CPU and GPU
- Don't worry about the Hinge cover being hard to come off, it was super easy.
- Didn't remove OEM TIM from under the CPU and GPU as it's not necessary, and could cause damage removing it.
- Swapped the CPU and GPU fans, so they have an even life span.
- Maintenance from now on, once a year: Swap fans and clean heat sinks
Latch connector and ridiculous connector side by side
OEM TIM under Nvidia
Repasted goodness ( tuniq, I would say has the consistency of gel toothpaste, spreads amazingly well)
Results (averages):
New (OEM TIM):
- Idle: 39C
- Load: 59C
Repasted (Tuniq TX-4):
- Idle: 36C
- Load: 53C
1 year use, never cleaning fans, OEM TIM
- Idle: 43C
- Load: 69
All data on stock clocks, no overclocking.
Same ambient and Load (old game, same car, track, etc): error -/+ 1C........... Repasting definitely worth it, especially with newer games
