One Really Pissed Off Dude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok I have a G750 was working fine with Win 8.0 So I decided to do the auto update to Win 8.1. Did the update now the bios does not recognize my DVD player and the bios does not save settings to do a restore from my thumb drive. WTF is this all about. I wanted to re GHOST my last backup and my system will not see my DVD player in the bios! THIS IS BULL****!!!!!!!!!!!!! I went to the bios to reset to defaults and the bios still does not see my DVD player. Hope somebody can give me a fix for the crap. In My Opinion Windows 8 is a piece of crap. I see no reason to run Windows 8 unless you have a touch screen. Like I said Windows 8 is a piece of crap!!!!!!!!!!!!! And Windows 8.1 is worse!!!! PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!

hozer, it's a common Windows problem, triggered by updates and random hits of cosmic rays 🙂

This should fix it, either Step 1 or 2.

Thanks for the Help hmscot but that did not work Sorry 😞 ......... but what I did was got back into the bios and turned off the secure boot option and hooked up my external blu ray player and the bios saw that. Then booted my ghost restore disk and restored my system. Man..... A person should not have to go thru all this crap just to update to Win 8.1. I will leave my system with Win 8.0 and say the hell with Win 8.1. I may consider going back to Win 7. It's may be a little slower than Win 8 but at least I wont have to go thru this BULL**** AGAIN! and is more stable than Win 8. The bios now see's my DVD player!

Battlefield 3 would not boot with Win 8.1 and then came up with a DX11 error. So I decided to say screw Windows 8.1.... I don't need this aggravation!!!

Now my system is back up and running with Windows 8.0 ( sigh!! ) I will be think about puting Windows 7 on soon! 🙂

My old asus n71jq had same issues and would lock up with windows 8.1 but a newer g750 shouldn't. Hmm. Windows 9 ftw hopefully lol

hozer, sorry you wasted your time going back to Windows 8.0, the problems you had have solutions, you gave up too quickly.

Patience and perseverance, and another day or two would have solved those simple problems, and any others you may have come across.

The DVD disappearing act is a common Windows problem, lots of google results come back on a search - Windows my dvd disappeared

Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 - its a common problem, which you can solve without rolling back to a previous Windows release.

And, there are solutions for BF3 not running in Windows 8.1 - solved way back in November 2013...

Now that you know you can roll back to Windows 8.0 easily, how about you try the Windows 8.1 upgrade again?

It is possible you will run into more issues, and need to google for solutions, but at least you know you can solve the problems if you spend a little time searching.

It takes so long to do all the Windows 8.0 updates to prepare for the Windows 8.1 Upgrade, and then so much time doing all the Windows 8.1 updates, and then more time doing the Windows 8.1 driver installs (downloaded from the G750JM download area), why would you give up so quickly?

Maybe this time, after all the updates, upgrade, updates, driver installs, etc you should do a Ghost Backup so you can roll forward quicker next time?

You should know that when you make posts like this to the internet, lots of other people read it, and get scared off by your failure to upgrade - and it might keep them from upgrading too.

They don't know that you don't know what you are doing and that you gave up too quickly, they just see the emotional outburst of failure and your joy of being back on Windows 8.0 - and you even suggest retreating back to Windows 7.

There is no need to retreat and hide from problems, find solutions and keep moving forward 🙂

Windows Vista didn't suck, Windows 7 didn't suck, Windows 8 didn't suck, Windows 8.1 doesn't suck... people that are too impatient to learn new things and figure out simple problems say they suck. 🙂

Well thanks for the tips hmscott! But being a tech for 15 years and working for INTEL for 5 years ( server mother board team ) and Adpatec ( SCSI ) for 7 years you learn real quick what needs to be done correctly. A person should not have to jump thru a SH!T load of hoops just to update an OS. That is just wrong PERIOD!

Side Note:

Windows Vista really did suck! Windows Vista was a memory hog big time and was very slow!

hozer, both problems were pretty minor... the problems you experience really weren't something to post such a livid report. With all your experience I can't understand why you haven't experienced a rougher time doing upgrades before now. You missed the typical Windows 8.1 upgrade bugs, and had a smooth experience from my point of view.

Vista added a lot of cool functionality that required a big jump in memory and GPU requirements. Vista was a problem for those that didn't have adequate hardware - which was a problem due to manufacturers trying to push through hardware that shouldn't have been passed as Vista compatible. I helped a number of people upgrade memory and video cards within the first couple of years of Vista release - a number of video card makers made inexpensive upgrades for just this need.

Fortunately I build top end spec PC's in each generation, for myself and clients, so none of them had problems with Vista and couldn't understand what all the Vista fuss was about.

Problems / incompatibilities during OS upgrades are to be expected, and keeping a level head is the most important thing to avoid a panic response, you didn't need to roll back, and were 99.999% of the way to a smooth running Windows 8.1 upgrade. You threw away all that time you spent on the first attempt, and may have put a block on yourself for upgrading.

hozer, I would be happy to help you through the Windows 8.1 again, and help you with any other problems that might come up. I think it can be done, since Millions of others have already done it successfully. PM me when you are ready 🙂

hmscott there is not enough money on this planet for me to run Windows 8.1 it's crap. I have better running OS's Like Linux ( Xubuntu ) on my other machine and has better security and is faster and Windows 7 on my other machine. Sorry that you disagree with my opinion's. It is what it is so get over it. I have tried to run linux on the ROG laptop but some of the drivers don't want to work but when I have time I will find a way to run Linux ( Xubuntu ) on this laptop.

\What version of linux to have running? I have Linux Xubuntu I can seam to get the mouse or some of the other drivers to work!
