nVIDIA vs ASUS drivers for GeForce 980M

I know from the past the mods here always recommend sticking to the ASUS Drivers vs the nVIDIA ones.

My laptop has the ASUS Driver 344.00, would the latest nVIDIA ones be better in terms of performance or better stick to my driver?

That doesn't answer what I asked. I read on the NBR forums that this latest driver causes stuttering and is crap. Hence why I asked which is actually better?

anyone got benchmarks with the ASUS driver vs the latest nVIDIA one?

Updating via NVidia is fine in practice. You may occasionally run into newfound issues with an updated driver, but that can happen with any update for any component.

The stuttering issue seems to be a common thing with the 970M and 980M chips, but we haven't been able to attribute it to any one thing specifically yet. It has happened on other OEMs systems, as well as some desktop cards, supposedly.

If the driver gives you trouble, you can roll back.

We customize Asus, MSI, and Clevo laptops!

Use the leaked G-Sync drivers... Best performance.. 100Hz refreshrate for G751 models... And... yes Oveclocking 🙂 - Lates GPU Tweak is also stable and doesnt crash all the time.

pokerface, Assu doesn't create / modify Nvidia drivers. Asus hosted Nvidia drivers are Nvidia created drivers. So you can download them from Asus or Nvidia directly.

New drivers from Nvidia will show up in Asus hosted support after a delay, there is no reason to wait, download them directly from Nvidia when they are released - but know that you need to pay attention to Nvidia release forum postings to see how the new drivers are being received by users - you may end up backing off from the new Nvidia driver to a previous more stable release.

Asus doesn't backfill drivers into old product release support areas, but that doesn't mean that the new drivers, Nvidia and other vendors, shouldn't be used to update your drivers - Asus just doesn't have the resources to update all their product support areas, and only make available the newest drivers in the support areas of new product releases.

Here is the list of places I look for updates for my G750JH; the best way to get a stable fully functioning G750/G751 is to update all the drivers / apps to the latest Windows 8.1 release.

The G750JW/JX/JH/JM/JS/JZ download areas haven't had new updates for a while, BIOS updates still happen in your model's support area, so check there from time to time.

The G750/G751/551/500/etc share the same basic hardware components; check support download areas for new hardware for newer drivers.

Asus maintains central support areas for hardware component features common to all products, those areas usually have the latest drivers after new hardware releases, sometimes there is a lag before the newer drivers show up there, so still to new product releases support downloads for the latest drivers.

Asus G751 Support / Download areas - Asus hasn't updated all the versions of these support areas, this link discusses the 3 locations were started independantly and not sync'd/updated through to the latest driver releases - check them all to be sure.

Boaz Beatz, I don't have an Optimus laptop handy right now to check the steps for you, but I would imagine downloading the latest driver from Intel, either using the Intel Driver Update Utility, or searching the Intel support site for the latest version, and then install the new driver. If needed, uninstall the current Intel GPU driver before installing the new one.

Intel® Driver Update Utility
http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect

Intel® Iris™ and HD Graphics Driver for Windows* 7/8/8.1 - for i7 4710HQ - Iris 4600

Intel® Iris™ and HD Graphics Driver for Windows* 7/8/8.1 - for i7 4860HQ - Iris 5200
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&FamilyId=39&ProductID=3723&ProdId=3723

Those links for different product ID's resolve to the same installers now, but just in case that changes, I wanted to let you know there is a difference within Intel for support of the different on die GPU's

Please post any error dialogs you get and can't figure out on your own... many have reported success installing these drivers, so if you have a problem, check your methodolgy to see if you can work it out and install on your own.

Please let us know how it works out 🙂
