New [to] Gaming Laptop

Hello,

This is my first gaming laptop (and actual first laptop I've ever purchased for myself)! I started out big though, got myself a g750jh 😉

As such I find myself wondering what I should do, and what order I should do it in. I've been watching these forums for a year now but there is just so much information, and I have a hard time going back and finding it. Thus I was wondering if this thread may end up becoming a sticky thread full of info for noobs or even those just getting a new laptop. I thought I remembered there being a sticky similar to this for the g75vw series.

Idea: just post links to other useful threads (thus less repetition of info and the original threads get used) as well as a suggested placement in the order, and I'll modify this original post with a growing list. (i.e. hard drive replacement thread before benchmark thread)

This would also help me as again I'm new and I think I want to benchmark and do some configs but I don't know best order of approach or of all the tools. (did some looking through the forms though and found gpu-z, 3DMark, and gputweak...) I want to also monitor the heat levels of both cpu and gpu during the testing process...

And if this is just a horrible idea and it comes back to 'search the forums' then I do at least have some real questions:

1. I have an intel SSD 520 series 240 gb (I got it a while ago thinking I'd pickup the g75vw, then the vx was announced but by the time it finally dropped in the US here came news of g750... that waiting game...), but the jh comes with the 128x2 msata setup. So do I keep the 1tb 5400 spindle or swap it so I have 2 SSDs? I plan on definitely have storage (i.e. past programming works and docs and movies etc) but I really plan on plenty of gaming now that I finally can... (mass download of long invested steam library here we come!)

2. My second question is encompassed in the above expression, I want to benchmark w/ temp monitoring software (that I can also use to monitor during gameplay later). Suggestions?

Side note: so far this laptop is friggen amazing! I haven't gotten to do everything yet, well actually I've only played league but I went from lowest settings at 20fps in fights to highest settings possible w/ 100+ fps (and the area next to the mousepad on the left got COLD while I was playing! Surprised me o.O It was a warm room full of people with laptops too... I was happy ^.^ ) I'm so excited for skyrim!!

P.S. I'm idling between 43C to 48C according to gpu-z, what's your jh average idle?

Thanks Myroslav, that particular post was a bit much, I do agree 🙂

I try to make the information I post fun, and include pictures in many of my postings, but in that post I hit the 10K letter limit and had to remove some of the images / info / fun which made it a bit textbooky

I was trying to make a list of all the issues and fixes, like the list the original question requested, but there is just too much to fit in one 10K posting and keep it interesting.

Oh, hmscott, i hope you take no offense to that. You are one of the posters here who i enjoy reading a lot with a huge amount of new information for myself. So thank you for all your posts. I would sign a petition asking to remove 10k character limit to see you write a full FAQ that would be stickied.

Or maybe you can do something in multiple posts like it is done here. That way this would be the g750 bible.

I don't usually have time to contribute, I am happy to help while I can. IDK if I will have time to put together a definitive post, but I hope someone can use the info we all have contributed to put together a new to G750 sticky that covers all the helpful hints.
