New SSD for my JW... Now What?

K so, just got a new JW model for the holidays from amazon so its the db71 model with 12gb of ram. obviously the only thing to do is get a SSD for it which I did... I now have a 1TB Samsung 840 EVO, I have seen both suggestions posted here and other sites... clone the original drive to the SSD or start from scratch with a windows 8/8.1 image and then load up all the software it came with from ASUS' support files. That being said which way should I go. I already did the cloning just to get it up and running to make sure there wasn't anything wrong with the drive and that it functioned properly, but i have no problem wiping it and doing a start from scratch install. (I used Samsung's software that came with the drive to do the mirroring).

Next, I saw in a different thread about setting up the BIOS boot page and all I had available was the [windows boot manage...] option which it seemed like someone was having an issue with that, mine boots perfectly fine so I'm not exactly sure if this is a problem or not and I don't recall how it was with the spin drive. Any suggestions on that?

I have read through the guide on overclock from Sean about how to set up your SSD for win 8, as well as that other guide specific to the g750jw on that other site which can't be mentioned so I think I'm pretty ok once everything is decided on how to set up and install everything.

I did use macrium reflect free to make an image copy of the original HD on an external drive I have as well as set up a thumb drive using the ASUS Backtracker program. Also just for info sake, when I used Samsung's migration software it moved the windows c partition as well as the 900mb and 350mb recovery. was it supposed to move anything else? thanks to all for any help and suggestions!

If you've already cloned to the SSD successfully, I wouldn't bother doing a clean install. You either clean install and spend time downloading and installing all drivers and some utilities, or you clone as you've done and you're all set (personally I'd remove Asus-branded stuff like splendid video and power4gear). The end result is more or less the same.

what's so bad about Splendid?

Keyword was "personally" 🙂 . Think of it as a preference for a flat equalizer preset vs boosted bass levels preset. More objectively, I was under the impression that Splendid causes more issues than it's worth (lot of threads about the infamous lines on screen problem say that Splendid in some way contributes to the issue).

I know early on folks with the g750 had some display issues and everyone that took splendid off got it fixed and it didn't do much anyway is what most of them said...

so if its a matter of time I have plenty of it to go back and do a clean install... I just couldn't pin down exactly how much better it is to do a clean install if i end up putting virtually all the same apps and software from asus on here versus cloning as I have done to verify the SSD is good... seems like Maximus on the link we've all seen to that site favors clean as well as Sean at overclock in his install and setup guide for win 8 and SSD's

There isn't that much stuff to remove from the Asus image IIRC, and frankly anyone that says uninstalling a few programs is worse than spending an hour or 2 reformatting/updating windows/installing drivers has way too much time on their hands and is trying to fix a problem that really isn't there. Mind you, I am running a clean install myself, but that's because I didn't bother to image the original HDD in the first place. I honestly don't see a compelling reason to reinstall, and I strongly lean towards the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" camp.

sounds like a compellingly logical statement...I suppose I'll just go ahead with the win8.1 update then spend that time updating the drivers for 8.1.

I assume i need both the 900mb and 300mb recovery/efi system partitions on here for being able to use the backtracker to recover in the event of a software/hardware holocaust?

I have zero experience with Asus's backtracker, so I can't help there. Seeing as you were able to clone your original HDD to the SSD, you can just keep the HDD around in case something messes up, then once you're fully updated to Win 8.1 with windows drivers/updates you can do another backup image of your SSD and keep it aside for emergency purposes.

nothing...and I mean NOTHING comes near the performance of a clean install!!

0 driver issues, 0 conflicts, better performance thanks to non-conflicting registry entries of older drivers or remnants of software

and I Don't advice of using registry cleaners as they do more harm than good...hence...I say...Clean Install is the way if you have time and want the absolute best performance
