New member and have some questions about buying laptop

Hello ASUS RoG Community Members,

I'm new member on this forum and i would like to ask some questions and advice/guide from experts, gurus on buying new laptop. My experience with computers, especially with laptops are at newbie level so please understand and help me.

I move around a lot and i want to buy laptop that can compete with desktop performance that is fast, good performance (fast boot, load, DOES NOT HEAT MUCH) and also good for gaming (World of Warcraft, DOTA 2, Starcraft II etc.. games which are not TOO graphic demanding), multitasking (does not freeze or stop responding), storing files, doing work (I work with documents a lot, running some other simple softwares).

I like to design of ASUS RoG G751 and G750 series (black) and my budget is between 1300 - 1600$. Also i don't live in the US, i live in Mongolia but i can get someone to bring it from USA. Where is best/guaranteed place (could be shop or via online) with reasonable price?

If you need more details please ask and i will provide to get the best suitable laptop for me.

The G750 / G751 aren't really laptops, they're desktop replacements, so if you think you'll be "gaming on the go" it's not going to happen. The GPU requires you to plug into the wall or your games will drop to a low FPS of around 15-30. (Depending on your game.)

Now when I say desktop replacement, I also say WHALE. AOOAWOAWOAOWO. She's a big girl, ranging between 3.9 to 4.8 kilos and is quite the fussy one when it comes to bags.. however, luckily the Asus ROG Nomad exists, and a few other bags by Everki and Oakley.

I'm pretty sure you could snatch a 970m model around Christmas, loads of shops might do a Boxing Day sale. I got mine for 30% off.. a whopping $600 cheaper. To this day, ( since a year ago ) my model is still more expensive than what I paid for.

The said "desktop performance" of the 970m / 980m series GPU's are 75% of their desktop counterparts. ( 3/4 of the strength. ) VERY GOOD for a mobile card.

Again, gaming on the go isn't so fruitful. You can definitely spend hours doing documents in Microsoft Office and watch movies.. but once you plug into the wall, the G751 truly purrs the muscle for your hours of gaming grind.

Agree with Darnassus for the fact that this indeed is a desktop replacement. However for the types of games you mentioned Byambadorj, it shuould work fine unplugged from the wall. I haven't even tested batteryboost yet. But with the regular settings, Far Cry 4 runs on this baby (970m) on ultra 1080p with 60FPS, dropping to 30 FPS unplugged, so imagine those games which are not so demanding...

Just don't expect much battery life, I see most games lasting 1 hour and a half, at most, close to 2 hours.

Ah yes, I almost forgot about the Battery Boost feature.. you're able to now scale how much power you draw from the battery, increasing your FPS while lowering your battery life. (Manually throttling it.) which is pretty neat. The G750's didn't have it.

Your battery will last around an hour if you intend on gaming on battery. However my estimation proves correct on games having radical jumps between 15-30 FPS. The great thing though is Battery Boost seems to reduce the stutter that we have much more prominently on the G750's.

Also, it kinda looks like this;

And you just move the slider to what you prefer and it'll give you an FPS estimation.

yup! It doesn't work extremely well with very heavy games unless you lower the settings. But if you are able to get a game running 60fps without battery boost with ease, then you should have no problem running the game at a constant 30 fps on battery boost.

What are the downsides of Optimus? I also heard of lower performance cuz of the laptop is using integrated Intel GPU instead of Nvidia GPU??? ANy explanation on this?

Of course SSD is faster... and get a minimum of 512GB so you dont have space issues with installing multiple larger games. The G751 is a beast, but still easily transportable, and this makes it amazing for taking to a friends place for some LAN sessions.

Optimus problems and the lack of switching between graphics cards are well documented on the internet. Do some Gogoling for info. 🙂

So which model do you suggest? Most importantly i need a laptop that runs smooth, fast and able to multi-task. To add on this, what i meant by "i will be moving a lot" was i work on different locations for 2 week and go back home. That means i have plugs to charge :)). Also does SSD perform better than HDD. which one should i get and what size is optimal?
